Personal Nursing Philosophy
When I compare how I viewed nursing before joining a nursing school, I can attest that my definition has expanded, and I can view the bigger picture in nursing. That is because different nursing practice encounters have shaped my career path and engagement in a healthcare setting. As I have witnessed, nursing is a continuous learning journey since each learning level learns different things that improve personal and professional life. As a result, I have learned and incorporated different strategies essential in caring for patients and their families, including effective ways to interact with my colleagues to improve the overall patient outcome. Hence, apart from the common nursing definition in most nursing scholarly books, my current definition is that nursing is an autonomous and collaborative approach that leads to holistic care in promoting the patient and healthcare providers’ well-being. Hence, nursing incorporates values like empathy, observation, education, support, and advocating for patients and their families.
My personal nursing philosophy has been changed by how I interact with individuals within the healthcare setting. One factor I always consider is my interpersonal relationship with each individual I come across, whether it is a patient, their family, my colleagues, or the healthcare executives. Therefore, my philosophy as a nurse practitioner is to ensure that I provide the patient population with individualized care since each patient has unique diseases and ways of adjusting to treatment. Hence, engaging them in personalized care, especially in patient education, will help them cooperate with the medical recommendation, thus influencing positive care coordination. In conclusion, I will always treat everyone around me the similar way that I would want to be treated.
