NRS 440 Reflection Paper Sample

Over the years, the nursing profession has played a vital role in the healthcare sector since nurses offer the required care to patients. As such, there is a need for nurses to be well-educated and competent in specific areas of care. It is also worth noting that the need for nursing staff has been on the rise in the last years, and the demand keeps on rising, leading to a shortage across the USA and other parts of the globe, hence requiring action. Consequently, there is a need for continued training and education of new nurses and professional and capacity development of the current nurses (Wakefield et al.,2021). Obtaining advanced degrees has also been shown to improve nurses’ skills and knowledge in offering effective patient care. As such, nursing education should be a major focus of nursing institutions and the healthcare profession to improve outcomes. NRS 440 Reflection Paper The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on the importance of nursing education and explore the educational goals.

Options In the Job Market Based on Educational Level

The available job market is heavily dependent on a person’s level of education. My current level of education is that of an RN with an associate degree in nursing. With this degree, there are several job market options. One of the options is working in the hospital setting as a staff nurse in the operating room, labor and delivery, intensive care, emergency, and medical-surgical, among other departments, performing roles such as patient education, medication administration, and directing patient care (Nelson et al.,2021). Roles can also be performed in specialty units. The other job market is in long-term care and rehabilitation, working as a rehabilitation nurse or nursing home nurse. NRS 440 Reflection Paper The next job opening is in public and community health, where various services can be offered, such as working with public health departments, disease prevention programs, health education, and community-based care.

Advanced Degrees to Pursue and Reasons For Attaining This Education

As discussed earlier, advanced nursing education is vital for better patient outcomes and better job opportunities. Therefore, it is important for nurses to have plans to pursue higher or advanced education. Therefore, as part of the plan, I am planning to attain an MSN degree in education. The main reason for pursuing the MSN degree is to improve the nursing profession. Currently, there is a shortage of qualified nurse educators; hence, obtaining this degree will help fill the gap by teaching and mentoring nursing students to increase the labor supply (Torrens et al.,2020). This degree can also help enhance the quality of nursing education since the program offers an in-depth knowledge of educational theories, assessment strategies, instructional design, and curriculum development. The plan is to obtain the MSN degree within two years. I also plan to obtain a DNP within six years. One of the major reasons for this goal is that obtaining a DNP degree will help me achieve my career development goals and be in a position to offer high levels of care, coordinate care teams, and assume leadership positions in NRS 440 Reflection Paper different settings, such as healthcare organizations, nurse education and training institutions and other patient care settings.

Increasing the Level of Education and Competitiveness In the Current Job Market

Obtaining higher levels of education is associated with several benefits. Among the benefits is improving competitiveness in the current job market. Therefore, obtaining higher education levels will improve my competitiveness in the current job market. Higher levels of education come with improved knowledge and skills in different areas of patient care and services, such as operating in collaborative and multi-professional teams, advanced skills, clinical reasoning, assessment, and diagnosis to improve patient outcomes. In addition, obtaining an MSN and DNP degree enables an individual to assume more senior roles due to better skills and knowledge (Wakefield et al.,2021). Skills obtained in higher education also open more doors since I will be able to work in more settings such as private practice hospitals, nursing homes, hospice care settings, acute care settings, correctional facilities, and other care clinics. NRS 440 Reflection Paper The skills obtained will also come with better decision-making, critical thinking, and leadership skills, which are key to better patient care and outcomes.

Relationship of Continuing Nursing Education to Competency, Attitudes, Knowledge and ANA Scope and Standards For Practice and Code of Ethics

Previous research has shown a relationship between continuing nursing education and competencies, attitudes, knowledge, and the ANA scope and standards for practice and code of ethics. Achieving particular competencies is important for better and desired patient care practices. It is worth noting that these competencies vary as one moves from associate degree, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and DNP or PhD. For example, obtaining a DNP degree will coincide with a nurse achieving the eight DNP essentials, which, in turn, are correlated with the competencies (Wakefield et al.,2021). Achieving or obtaining higher education also means that a nurse obtains more and higher competencies required for patient care. The implication is that continued nursing education is associated with improved competencies.

Continued nursing education is also associated with better and improved attitudes towards care. NRS 440 Reflection Paper When nurses pursue continued education through advanced degrees, they obtain critical skills that allow them to solve more challenging clinical situations and, hence, have a better attitude toward patient care. Such feats are key to the development of work attitudes and advanced skills, which can be used to offer specific care needs to patients. Through continued education, individuals gradually move from a bachelor’s degree to a doctor of nursing practice. Such incremental knowledge enables nurses to transition from basic care strategies and care to advanced care (Wakefield et al.,2021). For instance, as a DNP-prepared nurse, a nurse should be autonomous in decision-making and assume senior leadership roles to lead and influence care activities that impact patient outcomes and advocate more for patients (McCauley et al.,2020). Therefore, continued education leads to incremental knowledge, which is vital. Continued nursing education also makes nurses more capable of ethical care practices, which is in sync with the ANA codes of ethics. Advanced practice nurses become more culturally sensitive and have better ethical awareness. Hence, they are better positioned to give universally acceptable patient care.

Whether Continuing Nursing Education Should Be Mandatory

It is evident that continued nursing education is important to the nurses, the nursing profession, and the patient, leading to a debate about whether it should be mandatory (Mlambo et al.,2021). NRS 440 Reflection Paper My view is that nurses should be encouraged and supported to pursue continuing and advanced education. Nonetheless, continued education should not be mandatory since individuals have different career goals, ambitions, and aspirations; therefore, making continued education mandatory is like predetermining people’s goals. The costs involved are also high, which can be a barrier to some. Therefore, the decision to pursue higher nursing education should be voluntary, as it has always been

NRS 440 Reflection Paper Conclusion

The constant need for better patient care implies that strategies should be used to achieve the same. Continuing nursing education plays a crucial role in improving nurses’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes to offer better care. Therefore, it is advantageous to nurses, the nursing profession, and the patients. However, it should not be made mandatory. I plan to obtain an MSN in education and a DNP within two and six years, respectively.
