In addition, nursing education prepares nurses to work in a variety of healthcare settings and enables them to assume leadership roles within the profession. There are a few different professional certifications and advanced degrees in nursing education that one can pursue. Some examples include MSN, DNP and ASN degrees. Each one of these will give one the opportunity to learn more about nursing and specialize in a particular area. Therefore, if an individual is interested in furthering their nursing education, they can research out to different degree options available for them. The purpose of this assignment is to examine the importance of nursing education and to discuss my overall educational goals.

Options In the Job Market for ASN Level Nurse

Currently I am an ASN (Associate of Science in Nursing) level nurse. As an ASN level nurse, I have the opportunity to enter the nursing field at a variety of levels. One can always become a registered nurse (RN), a licensed practical nurse (LPN), or a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Individuals with this qualification can also choose to specialize in one particular area of nursing, such as pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, or women’s health. Based on my educational level (ASN nurse), the job market is quite diverse, offering opportunities in a variety of settings (Yancey, 2020). Here are some of the most popular options: -Hospitals: With their 24/7 operation schedule, hospitals are always in need of capable and qualified nurses. ASN level nurses can find work in a variety of departments within hospitals, from emergency rooms to medical/surgical units. There are three main types of nurses in the United States: Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). APRNs include Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Midwives, and Nurse Practitioners. ASN level nurses fall under the RN category. RNs with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) can find entry-level positions in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, home health agencies, long-term care facilities, schools, and industrial settings. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for RNs was $64,690 in May 2012. -Nursing homes: Nursing homes provide long-term care for patients who require constant supervision and care. ASN level nurses can be employed as staff registered nurses or charge nurses, responsible for overseeing the care of resident patients. -Physicians’ offices: Many ASN level nurses choose to go into private practice and they can work with physicians to deliver different healthcare services.

Professional Certification Anticipated

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued a report in 2010, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”, which made recommendations for how nurses can play a more central role in improving the nation’s health. One of the key recommendations was that nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training in order to be able to provide the complex care that is required in today’s healthcare system (Sebach & Chunta, 2018). The IOM report also called for nurses to have more leadership roles in hospitals and other healthcare organizations. So far, most of the emphasis has been placed on increasing the number of nurses who have a Bachelor’s degree. However, the IOM report recommended that nurses should eventually strive to attain doctoral degrees so that they can provide holistic care which leads to quality patient outcomes.

As a professional nurse who wants career advancement, my goal is to earn my DNP and get into maternity and maybe in 10 years also go for PHD and teach. In most cases, there is no exact time frame for achieving long-term goal, but with careful planning and execution, it is certainly possible to be completed within 10 years. Above all, I am of the opinion that the focus should be on quality rather than quantity when it comes to my schooling and work experience. First and foremost, I will strive to complete a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. Once I get DNP qualification, I will begin working towards obtaining a position in maternity care. In terms of furthering my education, going for a PhD will be an option down the road—and teaching is definitely a possibility once I have all the proper qualifications.

The DNP is the highest possible nursing degree that one can earn, and it signifies a commitment to the profession as well as to advancing one’s knowledge and clinical skills (Sebach & Chunta, 2018). I want to attain DNP and PHD qualification so that I can enter into practice at the highest level, and to get the opportunity to make a greater impact on patient outcomes. Additionally, I want to pursue DNP and PHD qualification so that I can have leadership roles where I can shape health care policy and champion for quality improvement initiatives. I understand the fact that pursuing a DNP is an intense investment of time and effort, but it pays off in terms of both professional satisfaction and career opportunities.

Impacts of Increasing Level of Education on Competitiveness

Education plays a significant role in determining an individual’s competitiveness in the job market. In most cases, those with more education will have a better chance of getting a job than those without educational credentials. For instance, in the case of nurses, those who have a Bachelor’s degree will typically be more competitive for jobs than those who only have an Associate’s degree. In addition, as the healthcare industry continues to change and evolve, it is increasingly important for nurses to be able to keep up with new advancements through continuing education. Increasing my level of education to DNP and finally to PHD will increase my competitiveness in the current job market that requires more research and evidence-based practices (Deldar et al., 2020). With these qualifications, I will have advanced skills required in making policies and in the provision of holistic care to all patients. Increasing the level of education to DNP and finally to PHD will significantly impact my role in future nursing in ensuring development of effective policies required in the transformation of healthcare delivery processes.

The Relationship of Continuing Nursing Education and Competency, Attitudes, Knowledge, And the ANA Scope And Standards for Practice and Code of Ethics

There is a significant relationship between continuing nursing education and competency, attitudes, knowledge, and the ANA Scope and Standards for Practice and Code of Ethics. Continuing nursing education and competency enhances knowledge required in advancing nursing practices through research (Deldar et al., 2020). Improvement of nursing education also enhance competency in performing different tasks in the healthcare sector. Additionally, attitude also improve in the course of acquiring advanced knowledge. In terms of knowledge, it’s crucial to continue developing your understanding of systems, attitude of a person, and practical experience-gaining techniques. As a result, nurses should continue to concentrate on developing their leadership and management abilities. One of the abilities needed for the new care delivery models is knowledge based on standardized scientific requirements. “Population health and population-based care management; care coordination; knowledge, abilities, and attitudes related to health policy; as well as competences that meet the developing health demands” are additional competency criteria.

Whether Continuing Nursing Education Should be Mandatory

Continuing nursing education should be mandatory for all nurses. Continuing nursing gives nurses the opportunity to develop special approaches of skills in providing efficient and safe patient care. Characteristically, nurses are passionate about the provision of quality care to all patients; as a result, they need to have insatiable thirst for knowledge (Deldar et al., 2020). Therefore, they need to thrive on learning new things in the field of healthcare. Given the above information, nurses ought to stay abreast of new knowledge so as to advance the quality of healthcare give. Continuing nursing education should therefore be mandatory.
