- Which weekly objectives do you have prior knowledge of, and to what extent?
I have prior knowledge of the objectives in Topic One including the importance of nursing research in enhancing patient outcomes. Lu (2023) explains that nursing research helps in the creation of evidence necessary for identifying and adopting best practices. This helps promote informed decision making ultimately enhancing patient outcomes, minimizing healthcare costs and promoting quality of care. I also have prior knowledge of objective three concerning the elements of evidence-based practice. For instance, The American Physical Therapy Association (2020) explains there are three elements of evidence-based practice including the best available evidence, the clinician’s knowledge and skills, and the patient’s wants and needs. I also have prior knowledge of the objectives in Topic Two concerning the types of qualitative designs. Renjith et al. (2021) explain there are different types of qualitative designs including narrative research, grounded theory research, phenomenological research, ethnographic, case study research and historical research. Lastly, I have prior knowledge concerning objectives in Topic Three concerning the types of research variables. Ofem & Mchi (2023) explain the types of variables include independent and dependent variables, research variables, demographic variables and extraneous variables.

There are various weekly objectives I lack prior knowledge of. This includes the objectives in Topic 4 concerning the utilization of p-value in determining statistical significance in quantitative research. Di Leo & Sardanelli (2020) explain that the p-value illustrates the extent of data compatibility with the null hypothesis. I also lack prior knowledge of the objectives in Topic Five concerning how evidence from research is utilized in nursing practice. Pitsillidou et al. (2021) explain that evidence-based practice implementation is a complex process that involves behavioral change by nursing professionals in addition to changes in the healthcare system.

There is one course-related topic I would like to discuss with my instructor and classmates. This relates to the use of the three elements of evidence-based practice to enhance the quality of care. The main question would be “How best available evidence, clinician’s knowledge and skills, and patient’s wants and needs can be considered to ensure the promotion of patient outcomes”.
