Topic 2 DQ 1: Qualitative Research Designs

Nursing and healthcare research designs vary depending on the type and objective of a study. Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data to gain insights into concepts and experiences. Phenomenological research is common in nursing as healthcare providers and researchers explore illnesses and patients’ experiences for improved knowledge, decision-making, and interventions. Alhazmi and Kaufmann (2022) described phenomenological research as identifying the essence of lived experience as described by the participants. Such an approach allows the researcher to present the experience comprehensively as described by primary participants. A suitable example of a phenomenological study is an exploration of patients’ experience of cancer through dialogue (interviews). The purpose is to illuminate the experience of illness, including pain, feelings, and physical and mental impacts, among other aspects.

Besides the phenomenological approach, researchers use grounded-theory designs to investigate phenomena. Grounded theory research involves the systematic collection and analysis of qualitative data to generate a theory (Smith-MacDonald et al., 2019). Mostly, researchers develop theories by thematically analyzing major findings. NRS 445 Topic 2 DQ 1 For instance, a study by Higginbotham et al. (2021) observed a ‘vicious cycle of heart failure care’ when exploring end-of-life experience among patients with end-stage heart failure. This theory was grounded on data and demonstrated the need for collaborative decision-making for better management of patients in this critical stage.

Unlike phenomenological research, a grounded-theory design generates a theory based on the collected data. In grounded-theory, researchers go beyond analyzing issues and explaining concepts to evaluate and describe the relationship among them (Smith-MacDonald et al., 2019). Despite this difference, both approaches help healthcare and nursing researchers to understand health concerns from the participants’ perspective. Researchers engage participants directly to gain an informed perspective of lived experiences and how health issues influence their overall health and other critical dimensions of life.
