            Change is certain in every aspect of human undertakings. As such, diverse change theories have been formulated to address various phenomena in organizations. The popular change theories that are widespread in organizations include social cognitive theory, Lewin’s three-step change theory, and Lippitt’s Phases of Change theory. The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the social cognitive theory and Lewin’s three-step change theory and investigate their appropriateness in the implementation of the current evidence-based practice (EBP) project.

            The social cognitive theory focuses on the essence of the personality, environment, and attitudes in adjusting the behaviors of an individual. This theory argues that change can only occur if an individual is self-motivated and have self-efficacy. This entails a firm self-belief in one’s capability to assume a given change and self-inspiration to go through the change process. Therefore, the social cognitive theory is anchored on the supposition that behavior is inspired by consequences. The project outcomes, therefore, act as the inspiration to adopt and maintain the behavior (Knapp et al., 2020). On the other hand, Lewin’s three-step change theory observes behavior as a result of driving and restraining forces, which operate in divergent directions (Boak, 2021). Motivating or driving forces connote positive forces that inspire people to move or act in the desired direction. However, restraining forces destabilize change by compelling people to move in opposite directions.

            According to Lewin’s three-step change theory, change occurs in various phases. The first phase of behavior change is unfreezing, which entails disrupting the behaviors or status. This can be achieved by different strategies such as promoting the motivating factors and minimizing the restraining forces. The second phase of this theory is movement. This phase of behavior modification involves relocating the behavior system of the person from the existing level to another level. This can be achieved by the use of strategies such as persuasion. The third phase of Lewin’s change theory is refreezing. This phase involves training people to permanently hold the desired change to avoid reverting to the initial behaviors. Overall, Lewin three step change theory emphasizes the functions of the motivating and restraining forces in modifying the behavior of people (Boak, 2021).

This theory is more realistic, goal-oriented, and coherent because it considers the vibrant external factors that are commonplace in nursing practice. The theory provides three clear phases that nursing homes can apply to inform changes in fall management and prevention. The phases include unfreezing, changing, and refreezing (Rosenbaum et al., 2018). My mentor has applied Lewin’s three-step change theory and achieved encouraging outcomes. The outcomes were supported by inspiring and retraining nurses to embrace the proposed EBP.
