Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal – Topic 8

In week 8, the reflective journal focuses on health policy, especially in relation to fall prevention to improve the quality of care and life for elderly residents in long term care facilities. Based on my practicum experience and interactions with different stakeholders in long term care settings, almost all organizations and settings have health policies that guide nurses and other providers on managing and preventing falls (Montero-Odasso et al., 2022). For instance, these policies emanate from federal agencies like the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) (2023), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as well as internal guidelines with health organizations and facilities. Health policies on fall prevention are essential for providers to reduce and stop the occurrence of these adverse events. For example, the study by Natora et al. (2022) shows the critical role that such policies play in preventing falls in different settings, including community-dwelling settings. What is evident is that there is a raft of health policies at various levels concerning fall prevention to eliminate this issue. NRS 493 Topic 8 Health Policy

The personal strengths that I have discovered this week include having an analytical approach to resources and evaluation of policies, increased collaborative approach to issues, and ability to work in teams to understand the effects of these policies (Singh et al., 2020). Conversely, my weaknesses include limited skills deployment when working in teams, being judgmental, and insufficient self-critique based on the level of awareness about falls and their associated adverse outcomes.
