Week 4- Ethical Considerations in Health Care

            The focus for this week for this journal is ethical considerations in healthcare. The current healthcare system is extremely complex and marred with various ethical challenges. Moreover, the delivery of healthcare significantly relies on clinical decisions and judgment by clinicians. These aspects are characterized by controversies and dilemmas (Butts & Rich, 2022). As such, nurses and other healthcare providers should develop awareness about ethical issues that are likely to arise in clinical practice.

Professional Practice related to Ethical Considerations in Health Care

            This practicum experience exposed me to the actuality of ethical challenges nurses often encounter in their clinical practice such as medical malpractices, do-not-resuscitate orders, physician-assisted suicide, medical negligence, and disclosure or withholding of medical data. In turn, it enabled me to discover and appreciate the importance of creating ethical awareness among healthcare professionals, especially nurses by acknowledging ethical consequences in all aspects of nursing clinical practice (Butts & Rich, 2022). Creating ethical consciousness among nurses is an effective way of empowering nurses to take the role of moral agents in the healthcare system and also enable them to provide ethical and safe care.

Personal Strengths and/or Weaknesses related to Ethical Considerations in Health Care

            Personal strengths relating to ethical considerations in healthcare are having a strong awareness of the leading ethical principles in healthcare such as non-maleficence, beneficence, autonomy, and justice. I always strive to implement these principles to ensure positive patient health outcomes. However, I realized that my weakness relating to ethical considerations in healthcare is the failure to recognize the crucial role of ethics in research (Hasan et al., 2021). I had little awareness of ethical considerations in research such as voluntary participation, informed consent, ensuring no harm to participants, and ensuring confidentiality and privacy of participants.

Additional Resources related to Ethical Considerations in Health Care

            The greatest resource that should be provided to nurses is training and education on ethical considerations in healthcare to increase their awareness of ethical values (Haahr et al., 2020). This will promote ethical practices, which are associated with better patient healthcare outcomes.
