Overview

Scholarly activities play a crucial role in improving students’ competency and competitiveness in their given spheres of knowledge and empower them to determine some nursing concerns that should be addressed in the healthcare system. The scholarly activity I participated in was joining a quality improvement team to enhance medication scan rates. This quality improvement team consisted of the interprofessional team from different departments across the healthcare setting. The major obligation of the team was to create ways to enhance medication scan rates in the hospital to help in addressing medication errors. Involving in quality improvement initiatives empowers students to obtain, assimilate, and implement crucial professional capabilities including managing complexities. It also provides an opportunity to enhance care, time management, presentation, and develop leadership skills to foster career development and develop a relationship with colleagues.

Problem

The hospital was concerned about the increasing incidences of medication errors. Medication errors are grave public health issues, which cause a substantial patient safety threat and are among the top causes of death in the United States.  Many medication errors happen at the point of administration. Medication errors are associated with many adverse effects on patients such as injuries, adverse drug events (ADE), and death (Salar et al., 2020). As such, it is imperative to address the issue to prevent the occurrences of risks. Joining a quality improvement team is critical in enhancing the medication scan rates to prevent medication errors.

Solution

The proposed intervention is a quality improvement over medication scan rates. Medication scanning systems can potentially reduce medication errors through electronic verification of the ‘5 rights’ of prescribing medication. The ‘5 rights’ include the right patient, right medication, right dose, right time, and right route (Ho & Burger, 2020). For instance, when scanning is done on the drug to be administered, the information is sent to computer software systems to verify different databases and produce real-time medication approvals or warnings.

Opportunity

Nurses acknowledge the negative impacts of medication errors in clinical practice. As such, this scholarly activity will use this understanding as an opportunity to offer education on improving medication scan rates. Participating in this scholarly activity will also provide an opportunity for professional growth through increasing awareness, capacity building, and exposure to the interprofessional team.
