Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial postings. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between two or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Cite sources in your responses to other classmates. Complete your participation for this assignment by the end of the week.
Legal Evidence and Application
This will be the final week of collecting evidence. Visit the South University Online Library and retrieve two peer-reviewed research articles focusing on legal issues related to your topic of interest. Critique each article, highlighting the strengths and the weaknesses of each article. Interpret the statistical analysis and significance of results. Finally, analyze the feasibility of applying this evidence to your topic of interest in your current practicum setting. Both articles should support nursing standards and patient safety within your chosen topic.
Week 8 Discussion
In Week 8, we will discuss the legal evidence pertaining to nursing standards or safe care as it applies to your topic of interest. Some questions to consider when retrieving evidence are as follows:
What happens when there is a deviation from the nursing standards?
Who determines what the nursing standards are?
Is there an accrediting body that oversees your topic?
Is your topic one in which reporting is required?
Where does the obligation ultimately lie in adhering to the nursing standards—with the nurse or the institution?
Consider these questions as you seek evidence for this week.
Many nurses believe that their employer’s malpractice insurance will protect them in the event of a patient-care error. Most nurses do not realize that the malpractice insurance will only protect them if they followed their employer’s policy and procedure. Consider the number of times each day that you observe a coworker “working around” a policy. This is a prime example where the facilities’ malpractice insurance would not cover an individual. All nurses (regardless of their role) are encouraged to carry their own malpractice insurance. It is your professional responsibility.
As a future Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), you are tasked with modeling appropriate behavior for all nurses. All nurses should be aware of their responsibilities in providing safe care. If you are currently a nursing leader, delve deep to find out why your nurses are doing a “work-around.” Your role in healthcare as a future DNP is to lead change and develop practices and policies where a “work-around” is not needed to deliver safe care.
Your Learning Objectives for the Week:
Evaluate biophysical, psychological, organizational, informatic, ethical, and legal knowledge with nursing science as a foundation for expert clinical nursing practice in a specific nursing clinical specialization.
Demonstrate accountability in specialty practice according to accepted standards care and safety.
