Contact an individual from the cultural group selected in module two (with their consent) and conduct a cultural interview.

This interview can be in person, over the phone, or through a video call.

The individual can be a patient, neighbor, grandparent, in-law, or friend. Do not use your parent, brother, sister, spouse, or significant other.

Respect the interviewee’s privacy and cultural beliefs.

Module 1

Culture is an important aspect of healthcare. Nurses should strive to provide culturally appropriate care to their patients. Cultural values, beliefs, and practices influence the uptake of different healthcare services. I am likely to encounter patients from cultural backgrounds as a nurse practitioner. I anticipate providing care to African Americans in my practice. Therefore, this paper lists the questions that will help me acquire insights into the cultural aspects of healthcare among African Americans. I will be interviewing my neighbor who is an African American.

Module 2

I interviewed my neighbor who is an African American. My preconceptions or stereotypes did not influence the interview process. I was open-minded during the interview. I was aware that the interviewees’ cultural values, backgrounds, and preferences differed from mine. As a result, I was open to learning new practices, beliefs, and values that nurse practitioners should consider when providing care to African American patients. I also recognized my bias before conducting the interview. This helped me develop strategies to overcome them and obtain adequate information about his culture and impact on health-related decisions.

The interview revealed some cultural factors that affect the healthcare decisions of the interviewee. One of the factors is trust in healthcare systems and healthcare providers. The interviewee reported that a positive experience with healthcare providers and healthcare systems increases the confidence and utilization of healthcare services. This includes being treated respectfully, involved in decision-making, and prioritizing his cultural and religious preferences in care planning. The other factor identified from the interview is family dynamics. The interviewee noted that his community values family involvement when making health-related decisions. This affects the uptake of healthcare services such as screening and other health promotion care. It was also evident from the interview that religious beliefs and practices are crucial for African Americans (Kauh et al., 2021; Omenka et al., 2020). Nurses and other healthcare providers should incorporate patients’ preferences such as prayers and rituals into the care plans of African Americans.

I will consider several strategies to provide culturally competent care for African Americans. Firstly, I will incorporate their cultural values, beliefs, and practices into their nursing care plans. For example, I will ensure rituals and prayers are incorporated into their treatment plans. Secondly, I will ensure family involvement in their care. This will include practices such as shared-decision making and family involvement in healthcare decisions. I will also focus on establishing a relationship based on respect, honesty, and trust with them (Agner, 2020; Hughes et al., 2020; Young & Guo, 2020). Such a consideration will strengthen cultural humility and the provision of culturally competent care to African American patients, families, and their communities.
