Nurses, irrespective of their roles and specialties have ethical and moral responsibilities to nursing practice and care provision. Ethical guidelines across all nursing practices are similar and there should be no difference based on the roles of advanced practice registered nurses (Haddad et al., 2023). However, individual nurses may have different perspectives on various ethical issues and dilemmas that they may confront. Advanced registered nursing roles like nurse practitioners (NPs) and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNs) have a set of ethical guidelines governing their practice. Despite having different specialties, both NPs, and CNSs observe ethical guidelines developed by the American Nurses Association and their specialty bodies. For instance, the ANA Code of Ethics binds all nurses regardless of their specialties. The interpretative statement on the code of conduct by ANA has four core ethical principles autonomy, beneficence, justice, and non-maleficence. Nurses should make ethical decisions and demonstrate ethical conduct when working with patients and carrying out research on human subjects (DeNisco, 2023). Therefore, veracity, privacy, confidentiality, and fidelity are critical, and nurses; either CNSs or NPs should comply with them. NUR 513 Topic 2 DQ 2

Situations presenting ethical dilemmas may require advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to respond differently based on ethical guidelines from their specialties. Situations like end-of-life care and ineffective responses to treatment may need diverse ethical guidelines and decisions. For instance, NPs may have prescriptive and expanded nursing practice authority and prescribe medications to manage pain and relieve symptoms (Grace et al., 2022). The NPs do this based on state laws and ethical guidelines. Conversely, CNSs may not enjoy similar authority and latitude in prescribing medications implying that they must work under the supervision of other healthcare professionals like physicians and even NPs to ascertain positive response to treatment interventions for patients.  The implication is that APRNs have diverse roles but similarities in ethical guidelines that inform their practice and kind of care for patients.
