NUR 513 Topic 6 DQ 1:Review the evidence-based practice project ideas you described in Topic 5 DQ 1. Based on your initial ideas, what types of scholarly nursing research (such as quantitative or qualitative research, peer-reviewed resources, etc.) would be required to further investigate the issue? Select an article related to your topic. Identify the criteria you would use based on the CRAAP test to evaluate the appropriateness of the research. Why is it important to select research that meets these criteria? Evaluate the “CRAAP Test” article from the New Jersey Institute of Technology Library, located in the topic Resources. The EBP project seeks to address the issue of poor interdepartmental communication in our organization. Quantitative research would be ideal for further investigating the issue and identifying the impact of various evidence-based strategies in improving communication in the workplace. Besides, quantitative studies provide objective data that is communicated through statistics and numbers, and the studies can be replicated in my EBP project (Esparrago-Kalidas, 2021). Peer-reviewed journals are also important in examining the issue since they are written by experts and reviewed by various experts in the field before the article is published, which promotes high-quality research.

The CRAAP test can be used to evaluate the appropriateness of Sheehan et al. (2021) articles using the Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose method. I would evaluate currency by examining the timeliness of the information in the article, including when the information was published, recent updates, and if it is current for the research topic (Esparrago-Kalidas, 2021). The article’s relevance would be established by examining whether the information relates to the research topic and the intended audience. The authority of the article would be determined by looking at the source of information, that is, the author’s credentials, sponsors, organizational affiliations, and author’s qualifications to write on the topic.

Accuracy would be established by examining the information’s reliability, truthfulness, and correctness. The article’s purpose would be established by assessing if the purpose of the article and possible biases are identified. It is essential to select articles meeting the CRAAP criteria to ensure reliable information (Esparrago-Kalidas, 2021). An article meeting this criterion has a low chance of having unreliable information. Besides, the CRAAP criterion ensures that the information is accurate and correct.

Work Topic 5-1 I posted:
Communication across departments is an area that would benefit from an improvement project in our organization (an insurance company). I work as a utilization nurse reviewer, where my responsibilities include inspecting claims to decide whether or not the claims should be reimbursed. Communication between departments in the company is poor, which may impact the quality of services provided by the organization. This can be attributed to a broken flow of information whereby information is not adequately shared internally, and this affects employees’ productivity (Arab & Muneeb, 2019). Besides, poor communication has led to occasional conflict between the head of departments, which can negatively impact work processes and workflow.

Nursing theories that can be applied to address the communication problem include Dyadic Interpersonal Communication Model, Experiential Communication Theories, and Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory. The Dyadic Model illustrates the dynamic interactive process that transpires between two parties, a sender and a recipient. A source or sender (encoder) seeks to be understood by the other person or recipient (decoder), who processes, analyzes, interprets, and understands the message. The decoder responds to the message as per their interpretation of the message (Solomon et al., 2021). The feedback process in the Dyadic model enables the encoder to confirm or modify messages.

The model explains that communication takes place within a context that is influenced by the circumstances, content, perception, attitude, and emotional and physical state of the encoder and decoder. These factors can also alter the message or the delivery of the message (Solomon et al., 2021). Therefore, this is the best applicable theory to address poor interdepartmental communication since it can help novice and experienced employees to communicate by applying the feedback process to confirm the accuracy and correspondence of verbal and nonverbal messages.
