NUR 514 APA: Leadership Style Reflective Sample

Self-awareness is critical for nurses and nurse leaders to develop leadership skills as they can recognize their strengths, weaknesses, values, appreciate their emotional intelligence, and learning styles and be effective in assigned roles and responsibilities. Self-reflection is a core aspect of developing self-awareness and allows people to understand their behaviors and adapt their approaches in working in teams and other people leading to the attainment of their professional goals Brunt et al., 2024). The purpose of this essay is to provide a reflection of my leadership style based on self-assessment by taking three different personality, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence tests. The paper also identifies the leadership style that aligns with my philosophy of care and areas of improvement as well as leadership theories and styles.

Rationale and Brief Summary for Selecting Each Self-Assessment

The rationale for selecting different self-assessment tests is to ascertain diverse results to effectively indicate an in-depth personal evaluation. The three selected tests included Personality test, Emotional Intelligence Test, and learning style or VARK test. I selected the Personality test to understand my strengths and weaknesses. NUR 514 APA: Leadership Style Reflective  The Clifton StrengthsFinder is a self-diagnostic examination that allows one to determine their leadership philosophy, strengths and weaknesses. Based on the test, my strengths include being a learner, developer, include, positivity and intellection. These strengths mean that I can do well a learner as illustrated by the outcomes of the VARK test. According to VARK framework, my learning style is mild kinesthetic as I prefer learning through practical experience and doing. I like examples, trials and errors, studies and real ways of doing things (VAR, n.d). The third test was the emotional intelligence (EI) test as it would assist me to understand my colleagues and my interactive abilities with different stakeholders in the facility. The results from the test showed a score of 70/100, implying that I am soundly skilled in my capability to identify, determine, perceive, and express emotions among people and myself (PsychTests AIM Inc., 2024). These tests demonstrate the importance of nurse leaders and nurses focusing on reflection to improve their interactions and their personality for better patient outcomes.

Leadership Style Aligning with my Philosophy of Care & Appeal

 My philosophy of care focuses on humanity and being genuine when interacting with patients. My philosophy of care is encapsulated in Jean Watson’s approach to care or theory of human caring. The theory implores nurses and other healthcare providers to demonstrate genuine values like love and selflessness to create a healing environment for patients. The leadership style that aligns with my care philosophy is servant leadership. The servant leadership style considers a leader as an individual who prioritizes the needs and interests of others before theirs. The desire to serve others, developing strong interactions and relationships, active listening, self-aware, and demonstrating empathy and humility are the core values and characteristics of servant leaders. Additionally, servant leaders have a heightened sense of generosity, values and ethics as well as maintain high integrity that helps them attain power and influence. The most appealing attributes of servant leadership style entail its characteristics like active listening, empathy, healing and awareness, persuasion and foresight as well as stewardship. Servant leaders are also committed to people’s growth and focus on building a community which is essential in healthcare as illustrated through inter-professional collaborations. In their systematic review of literature, Demeke et al. (2024) demonstrate the importance of servant leadership in healthcare. Further, Canavesi et al. (2022) show that servant leadership is becoming a core part of improving outcomes and performance in many industries, including healthcare. Therefore, these attributes attracts one to implementing servant leadership in their practice settings.

Reflection on Incorporating Elements of Servant Leadership

Integrating servant leadership in healthcare and nursing is critical to attaining quality patient outcomes. As such, I can integrate these attributes by ensuring that I develop or build teams through inter-professional collaboration and through nurses in my department to work closely together through teamwork. Secondly, I can incorporate these attributes through effective listening, being ready and willing to learn, and constantly showing empathy and humility through my actions and decisions. Thirdly, servant leaders prioritize the needs of others. NUR 514 APA: Leadership Style Reflective  Therefore, I will integrate this leadership style by prioritizing patient care, the interests and concerns of other nurses, and embracing diverse ideas and approaches to situations in the healthcare setting.

Areas for Improvement Based on the Assessments

The different tests and self-assessments are aimed at understanding my strengths and weakness without any bias or prejudice. These three assessments have enabled me to identify that the aspects or strengths I possess are fundamental and desirable. However, the assessments also illustrate areas that require improvements. These include my communication attributes, nurturing of better interactions and increased embracement of diversity and divergent views from others (Burnt et al., 2024). Accommodating such views and perspectives is essential for one to learn better ways.

The steps to improve my leadership capabilities include reading more research and effective attributes of successful leaders, implementing new insights through such information, and interacting more with others to build confidence and enhance my perspective on diversity. Leaders develop effective attributes through practice and perception. As such, my focus is to integrate these attributes through implementing them and aligning with nursing theories like human caring by Jean Watson. NUR 514 APA: Leadership Style Reflective  

Characteristics of an Effective Professional Nurse Leader

Professional nurse leaders must demonstrate certain characteristics or attributes that endure them to followers and help inspire and motivate them to perform and attain set organizational goals and vision. According to American Nurses Association (ANA) (2023), strong leaders in nursing are essential to help navigate the constantly changing health care. Therefore, a leaders should inspire and influence others to attain their maximum potential and draw upon critical thinking skills to manage their teams. As such, an effective nurse leader should employ an appropriate leadership style that include servant leadership, transformational leadership and participative leadership styles. Effective nurse leaders have strong communication and interpersonal skills, they show empathy and humility, they build and develop teams, and possess patient-care skills based on the most current evidence (Brunt et al., 2024). They mentor their team members and demonstrate high levels of cultural competence due to diversity in healthcare. Nurse leaders who possess these attributes are effective in their leadership since they engage others, show respect and value for others; especially patients and colleagues, and work collaboratively in teams to generate necessary solutions for problems and emerging challenges. Leaders need these attributes to show compassion and empathy to patients and subordinates and understand their situations.

Leadership Theory and Leadership Style

The transformational leadership theory or model focuses on guidance that emphasizes motivating employees, and creating a vision and encouraging them to attain it. Transformational leaders possess fundamental skills that include ability to mobilize followers or employees, inspire them and boost their morale and motivation (Ana, 2023b). Transformational leadership style focuses on encouraging, inspiring, and motivating employees to innovate and attain the change required to shape outcomes and performance in nursing practice and healthcare organizations.

The theory supports a professional nurse leader in nursing leadership by emphasizing the importance of engaging and inspiring employees to attain their best performance. In their study, Khan et al. (2020) observe that transformational leadership style has a significant positive association with intrinsic motivation of employees. Again, the American Nurses Association (ANA) (2023b) is categorical that transformational leaders inspire employees to strive beyond required expectations and work toward a shared vision. ANA asserts that transformational nurse leaders are identified by their awareness and understanding of the current health care system and willingness to collaborate in teams to know flows and change the system for better patient outcomes and staff performance (Canavesi et al., 2022). Transformational leadership theory shows that such leaders have conflict resolution attributes, better decision-making capabilities and negotiation skills to develop a conducive workplace environment.

Conclusion

Self-reflection is an essential activity for nurses and nurse leaders to understand their strengths and areas for improvement. The self-assessment activities allow one to develop appropriate and effective leadership attributes in their nursing profession and practice. Leadership theories and styles align with one’s personal strengths and attributes as demonstrated through their self-assessment.
