Health advocacy is one of the key competencies required as an advanced practice nurse. Nurses are involved in direct patient care and thus their contributions to health policymaking are influential. Numerous strategies have been put in place to enhance the participation of nurses in patient advocacy and legislative processes. These include engaging in clinical and self-governance opportunities within healthcare facilities, gaining health advocacy competency through professional development, and aligning and committing oneself to political processes (Anders, 2020). This is because of the role politics play in legislative processes and ensuring the implementation of passed health policies.

Research forms the basis for most evidence-based policy processes. It is thus beneficial for a nurse to be involved in clinical research to come up with innovative ideas to address healthcare problems. This will open opportunities for patient advocacy from the recommendations from research findings. Additionally, grassroots advocacy, community partnerships, individual health advocacy programs, and the use of technology to influence legislators are other ways of enhancing participation in patient advocacy (Kuehne et al., 2022). The above-mentioned strategies if adopted will immensely contribute to my participation in patient advocacy. This will not only lead to improvement in patient care but also improvement in the efficiency of health systems.

It is important to identify barriers to meaningful participation in policymaking and patient advocacy. This is because understanding these barriers will give room for appropriate measures to be put in place to mitigate them. Such barriers include tokenistic involvement, stakeholder hierarchy that exhibits fragmented engagement, mutual distrust among stakeholders, biased stakeholder preferences, and a lack of a culture of engagement (Masefield et al., 2021). It is thus important to engage all the stakeholders equitably for better representation. Policy literacy can be availed to local and entry-level policymakers to empower them. This will ensure the representation of the health interests of diverse communities from the grassroots level.
