Leading and managing are related concepts but very different in their execution. Leading is concerned with influencing and motivating others to attain a set common goal or vision. Leading entails inspiring the team members, setting and carrying a vision and guiding others towards its attainment (Weiss et al., 2019). Leaders are considered role models and expected to exhibit certain qualities and attributes based on their style of leadership like empathy, integrity, listening, transformative, and building teamwork. On its part, managing is concerned with keeping the status quo through planning, organizing, and coordination as well as allocation of resources to attain certain objectives or goals (Gavin, 2019). Effective managers possess specific technical skills, knowledge, and expertise to attain set goals and objectives.

Advanced registered nurses (ARNs) can lead well and manage teams and resources through adopting an effective approach to both aspects in their clinical environment. The use of leadership models like transformation and servant leadership styles can help ARN to lead and also manage. Nurse leaders are essentially managers who possess sufficient skills, expertise, and knowledge due to their advanced training and experience as healthcare providers. Through these leadership styles, advanced registered nurses cab motivate their nursing team by demonstrating professionalism, commitment and empathy while interacting with their patients.

One strategy that I have used to lead is fostering open and effective communication among team members that allows all to share ideas and concerns while building a culture of trust and mutual respect. Conflicts are an inevitable part of healthcare organizations and occur due different yet critical reasons or causes. These include possible communication breakdown that leads to lack of understanding, differences in values and goals among the healthcare workers and the management, and resource scarcity. Again, ambiguity in roles, incivility and personality differences can lead to conflicts among employees in healthcare organizations (DeNisco et al., 2019). The leadership and management style practiced by both leaders and managers in these entities can be sources of conflicts, especially if the styles do not incorporate open and mutual communication and respect.

Nurse leaders are at the center of addressing conflicts that happen in their organizations. Imperatively, they should use appropriate principles of negotiating these situations. These principles include open communication which encourages conflicting parties or nurses to express their thoughts, feelings, and perspectives, active listening that requires empathy and truly understanding other person’s perspective and showing interest and not taking positions or being judgmental (Lamb et al., 2019). More fundamentally, the nurse leader should focus on having a win-win solution to satisfy all the conflicting parties. The implication is that nurses should demonstrate and deploy objective criteria that entails using fair standards and approaches to resolving conflicts in their practice setting.

In resolving conflicts within their organizations, nurse leaders can employ effective models or leadership theories like transformational approach. The transformational leadership model can be effective in addressing conflicts as it emphasizes importance of leaders inspiring and motivating their followers to go beyond their self-interest for the greater and common good of their organization (Weiss et al., 2019). Through the transformational leadership approach, the nurse leader inspires followers to go beyond their individual issues and interest and work towards a common goal which reduces frictions. The style allows leaders to encourage innovation and be role models for ideal behavior that reduces conflicting perspectives and approaches.
