NUR 550 Topic 2 DQ 1 Explain the value of biostatistics in population health research

Epidemiology

Biostatistics provides data through scientific modeling, which forms the basis of epidemiological research. Biostatistics is used in every point of clinical research, from protocol development data analysis to writing manuscripts. In clinical research, biostatistics is valuable because it shortens the timelines of the research process and reduces risks and costs. Biostatistics can evaluate and integrate prior research findings for researchers, enhancing the quality of a clinical study (Matranga et al., 2021). Similarly, in epidemiology, biostatistics assist in gathering information that those epidemiologists interpret to draw inferences that help make decisions regarding preventive measures for diseases. Biostatistics carries out four important tasks involving collection, analysis, presentation, and interpretation of information that provide insights on various issues in healthcare. For example, healthcare receives voluminous amounts of data that need analyzing interpreting to provide information on characteristics of diseases, such as COVID-19 and preventing a future outbreak.

Epidemiology is vital in population research because it applies the principles of biostatistics to evaluate characteristics of diseases within populations, including prevalence and causes (Matranga et al., 2021). The information from epidemiological research is valuable for developing strategies to curb the spread of infections, manage populations, and prevent future occurrences. As such, epidemiological research provides information that helps public workers develop interventions to keep populations healthy to prevent disease outbreaks.

Epidemiology and biostatistics are significant to evidence-based practice because they can provide information related to my population of interest. Biostatistics and epidemiology focus research on population at-risk to provide relevant information on diseases and health issues affecting the group (Diderichsen, 2018). I will apply the two elements in my health research to explore my population’s health status and needs of interest. Consequently, the information will be essential for developing management and intervention plans for the population. Epidemiological data will provide insights for developing strategies to promote the health and wellbeing of populations.
