NUR 634 Topic 13 DQ 2 Sample
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is any form of physical, psychological, sexual, and emotional abuse caused by a sexual partner or spouse. Its impact on pregnancy is associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes. Physical abuse may cause abdominal trauma and result in conditions such as miscarriages, placental abruption, premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, antepartum hemorrhage, stillbirth, and maternal death (Agarwal et al., 2023). Sexual abuse has also predisposed the mother to unwanted sexually transmitted illnesses that may complicate the pregnancy. IPV has also been associated with an increased risk for anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, which harm maternal health.
When a case of IPV is detected, healthcare providers have a role in building a trusting relationship with the patient. The healthcare provider should also treat any health problem and provide emotional and psychological support to the patient (Moreira, 2023). NUR 634 Topic 13 DQ 2 The healthcare provider should also refer the patient to specialist care specialists to provide advanced care. Additionally, the healthcare provider should report any evident or suspected violence to the relevant legal institution and provide detailed documentation of their findings. The healthcare provider should also offer follow-up services to the patient to ensure continued support.
Hurt-Insult-Threaten-Scream (HITS) is a four-question IPV screening tool. The questions inquire about how often the partner physically hurt, insulted, threatened with harm, and screamed at them. It uses a five-point scale from never to frequently. A score above 10 indicates a person is at risk of IPV (Li et al., 2022). If the patient is at risk of IPV, I would recommend they to visit the National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) website, which provides resources that would educate the patient on IPV and provide support for them. Alternatively, I would recommend the Community Alliance Against Family Abuse in Arizona, whose aim is to empower and support IPV survivors.
