Bate’s physical examination videos have been crucial in my pediatric rotation. They have equipped me with the necessary skills that are crucial in my current and future practice. For instance, I have learned how to perform a head–to–toe examination for the pediatric population and the significance of any abnormal findings, such as bulging and sunken fontanelles. I can also identify dysmorphic features that are characteristic of certain diseases such as Down’s syndrome. Additionally, I have learned how to diagnose rickets based on physical examination findings (Gentile et al., 2021). The findings include hypotonia, rachitic rosary, widened metaphysis, and a pigeon-shaped chest. I have also learned how to examine patients likely to have malnutrition. NUR 634 Topic 15 DQ 2 I have learned how to perform a mid-upper arm circumference, head circumference, and abdominal circumference.
I have noted that some aspects of pediatric history and physical examination differ from those in adults. For example, while obtaining a history from the guardian, I have noted the importance of obtaining information about growth and developmental milestones (Tesfay et al., 2021). This enables the healthcare provider to identify if there were any delays in developmental milestones that may need further evaluation. In addition, I have also noted the importance of obtaining an immunization history for the child to ensure that the child’s vaccinations are up to date. NUR 634 Topic 15 DQ 2 I have also noted that the neonatal and early infancy physical examination has to include primitive reflexes examination to check for central nervous system activity.
During my rotation, I have learned the importance of using simple and easy-to-understand language while engaging with children. This enhances communication and understanding while allowing them to ask questions in areas they might not understand (Appiah et al., 2022). I have also learned the importance of incorporating play among the pediatric population to make the environment friendlier and reduce anxiety in the healthcare facility.
