Bates’ Visual Guide videos have helped equip me with the necessary physical examination skills for the nose, mouth, and neck. For instance, I have learned about the importance of an otoscope in anterior rhinoscopy examination. The use of otoscopy in nasal examination aids in the visualization of internal nasal structures such as the vestibule, sinuses, turbinate, mucosa, and septum and the diagnosis of certain nasal diseases, including infections, inflammations, and ulcers (Rehman et al., 2024). In addition, I have also learned how the mouth is classified into the oral cavity proper and vestibule and how to perform a detailed examination. The videos have taught me the importance of using a tongue depressor in allowing movement of oral cavity contents in allowing for inspection of the uvula, soft palate, salivary glands, tonsillar tissue, palatal folds, and posterior pharyngeal wall.
I have noted that I am quite confident performing a proper neck examination. NUR 634 Topic 3 DQ 2 I have been able to identify important neck landmarks that are crucial in the triangular anatomical subdivision of the neck. I can also locate cervical lymph nodes, classify them based on the neck levels, and identify any abnormal lymph nodes (Chorath et al., 2021). Additionally, I can identify and characterize any neck swelling based on my inspection and palpation findings. I can also auscultate for a carotid pulse, characterize it, and identify any bruit.
During this experience, I have noted I need to focus more on nose examination. I have noted that I have challenges identifying different nasal structures during otoscopy. I have also noted I have challenges differentiating nasal polyps and inferior turbinate hypertrophy on otoscopy. I have also noted I need to improve on the tonsillar examination, especially when I need to grade tonsils based on the Brodsky and Koch grading scale (Kuskonmaz et al., 2023). The scale grades tonsil size based on the percentage of space they occupy on the oropharyngeal space.
