Physical exam techniques are crucial in the clinical evaluation of various diseases. For example, dermatological physical examination is essential in the clinical assessment of diseases and clinical conditions affecting the skin, nails, and hair. Using Bates Physical exam videos, I have learned how to use a dermoscope that utilizes epiluminescence microscopy to evaluate skin disorders affecting the epidermis, dermal-epidermal junction, and reticular dermis (Iancu et al., 2023). In addition, I have learned how to use a Wood’s Lamp to examine skin and scalp for lesions, including skin pigmentation and tinea capitis. I have also learned how to examine skin lesions by utilizing inspection and palpation to determine skin lesions.

During my period in dermatology, I have noticed that I can confidently examine primary skin lesions utilizing inspection and palpation techniques. NUR 634 Topic 6 DQ 2 I can characterize skin lesions by their location, distribution, presence of erythema, surface outline, type, color, arrangement, borders, and shape (Skuhala et al., 2022). I can also identify raised, flat, and fluid-filled lesions by examination and classify them based on size and contents. I can also use a Wood’s lamp confidently to diagnose different scalp and skin bacterial and fungal infections and understand the basis of fluorescence in different conditions (Dyer et al., 2022). For example, bacterial infections exhibit a green color, while fungal infections exhibit a yellow-green to blue-green color on Wood’s lamp.

However, I have challenges using a dermoscopy to examine pigmented skin lesions and identify early phases of cutaneous malignant melanoma. I am having challenges differentiating the different cutaneous skin layers seen using the microscope and understanding the patterns of change seen in pigmented skin lesions (Iancu et al., 2023). I am also having difficulties understanding the scoring systems applied with dermoscopy in diagnosing melanocytic and non-melanocytic lesions. I have also noted difficulties differentiating the different types of secondary skin lesions, such as scales, fissures, excoriations, and lichenifications.
