Nursing curriculum design has various levels that students can enroll in to receive certifications and be accredited to become practicing nurses. The three major nursing programs include associate, undergraduate, and graduate. This paper will discuss the differences between these three programs. Additionally, it will address the societal trends that are likely to impact curriculum development at these levels. Finally, it will capture how societal trends in the United States are influenced by global awareness and perspectives.

Differences in Associate, Undergraduate, and Graduate Programs’ Curriculum Design

The curriculum design for the three levels differs significantly. An associate’s degree is usually pursued at a community college following two years of study. Students are provided with general education requirements, which enable them to earn a bachelor’s degree after studying for two more years. An undergraduate program is pursued by enrolling directly into the bachelor’s degree program or advancing an associate’s degree. The undergraduate program has various specializations that students choose from based on their career dreams. Students acquire the foundation required for most jobs in the US after completing this four-year program. The first two years of the program provide the learners with broad general education, mainly focusing on high school subjects, including English, Mathematics, History, Languages, and Sciences. A graduate program is an advanced degree pursued after the completion of a bachelor’s degree. The bachelor’s degree should be in a field related to the graduate program of interest. Students specialize in graduate programs based on their future job of interest. Graduate programs last between one and four years based on the number of classes a student takes annually and the study field. In most cases, students pursue their graduate programs while still working full time. Enrolling in these programs is sometimes necessitated by one’s career, such as medicine and law. Upon completing a master’s degree, some individuals enroll in a doctorate to further their education.

Societal Trends that Influence Curriculum Development

Some societal trends influence curriculum development at these levels. The current health reforms are exerting significant pressure on nursing education programs to produce a more educated nursing workforce whose performance can align with the changing trends. Additionally, research into patient outcomes is pressurizing nursing education to prepare nurse practitioners for higher education levels. Increased nursing educational preparation improves patient outcomes due to delivering quality and safe care (Rahman & Mu’taman Jarrar, 2015). Nonetheless, the associate degree programs are being forced to lower credit requirements for the degree.

The Impact of Global Awareness and Perspectives on the US Society Trends

The societal trends in the US are influenced by global awareness and perspectives. Global awareness entails one’s capacity to respect, understand, and work well with individuals from diverse cultures. The US social and academic trends are influenced by global awareness since the world is interconnected. Thus, the US strives to create global citizens who can cope with diverse cultural groups worldwide through social trends. On the other hand, a global perspective involves being open to contemporary issues, ideas, and solutions. Additionally, it entails the willingness to implement change upon discovering new systems, processes, and procedures that work better than the current ones. It also means being sensitive to the cultural practices and traditions of other ethnic groups and being ready to learn from them. Therefore, a global perspective influences social trends in the US since citizens are willing to learn from different ethnic groups and change how things are done.
