NURS 493 Discussion Question
- Using the Tool Kit in the learning materials, describe the set of criteria you will use to guide and determine the prioritization process upon community health assessment analysis.
Community health assessment is an essential process for identifying community health needs and establishing evidence-based mechanisms for addressing them to foster people’s health and well-being. Clark (2015) defines community need assessment as “an effort to identify and prioritize a community’s health needs, accomplished by collecting and analyzing data, including input from the community” (p. 357). It is essential to note that collecting and analyzing data about people’s health needs result in multiple options, considering the prevailing biological, psychological, environmental, sociocultural, and behavioral determinants of health. As a result, prioritization is profound in establishing the community’s health priorities and influencing evidence-based response interventions.
During the community health assessment practice, the prioritization process supports data-driven planning by enabling the identification of significant health problems and inspiring response mechanisms. According to Sousa et al. (2017), an absence of default formulas for prioritization motivates each community intervention team to define unique processes with different techniques. Amidst the autonomy to adopt a different prioritization technique during community health assessment analysis, I would use prioritization criteria with the following strategies: the magnitude of the problem, severity, need among vulnerable populations, community’s capacity and willingness to respond to the issue, availability of community resources consistent with the health problem, existing interventions, and potential barriers to addressing the need. Also, I would consider the evidence that an intervention can change the problem, whether the problem is a root cause of other issues, organizational capacity to address the problem, and the opportunity to intervene at the prevention level.
