No doubt, health information technology (Health IT) has transformed nursing practice with positive outcomes on patient care. Based on this understanding, Farokhzadian et al. (2020) examined the outcomes associated with IT implementation in healthcare from the perspective of nurses. Nursing practice is significantly impacted by such systems implemented in the clinical environment because nurses are the frontline staff directly involved in IT systems such as electronic health records, remote patient monitoring devices, etc. The study’s objective was to evaluate nurses’ viewpoints and experiences regarding the benefits of using health IT in the clinical environment. The qualitative study selected 14 participants from four different large hospitals in the country. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed through a content analysis approach.

According to the results, six themes emerged concerning the benefits of integrating IT into the clinical environment to enhance nursing practice. The highlighted themes were improvement in quality, patient care, and efficiency, enhancement of resource management, facilitation of professional and organizational development, improvement of policymaking and management performance, facilitation of technological communication management, improvement in documentation, monitoring, and management, and lastly, better resource management.

Moore et al. (2020) investigated how implementing health IT impacts nursing time outcomes. Nursing time is critical in clinical care with a high cost for outcomes, particularly mental health. The article is based on a systematic review of 33 articles that met the set inclusion criteria. The study reviewed the impact implementation of health IT, including the barcode medication administration (BCMA) and EHR, had on nurses’ documentation time. According to the results, the outcome of the implementation of EHR and BCMA was increased documentation time for nurses. However, the time taken for medication administration was reduced by 33%. Another outcome noted from the reviewed implementations was redistribution in nursing time. Nurses spent more time in value-adding activities compared to pre-implementation. For example, the outcomes showed that nurses spent more time providing direct care to patients and inter-professional communication to enhance the patient care process and nursing practice outcomes. The lesson learnt from the implementation is that the implementation of health IT has the negative impact of increasing documentation time for nurses. However, this is complemented by redistribution of nursing time in other areas to focus on spending more time in areas that add value to the care and management process, such as delivering direct patient care.

Veet et al. (2020) investigated the outcomes of health delivery systems on clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness. The clinical delivery system is reviewed in the context of patient-centred medical homes (PCMHs). The study aimed to evaluate the outcomes related to the utilization, quality, patient satisfaction, economic, and clinical practice. The authors reviewed 64 studies; a mix of clinical trials and systematic studies based on technological delivery systems used in PCMHs. The study revealed that the implementation of patient-centred medical homes decreased the use of emergency departments, cost, and primary care use. The study also investigated the delivery system government systems, which reported an outcome of increased utilization of primary care. Overall, the results are positive outcomes on costs, clinical nursing practices, quality of care, and patient satisfaction. One of the lessons learnt from this implementation is that it enhances care coordination across various facilities, including government-based administrations such as the Veteran facilities. These systems, including EHR, barcode medication administration, decision support systems, patient monitoring devices, and communication systems, have revolutionized nursing practice and patient care. The studies reveal several outcomes of implementing different health IT systems for patient management and care delivery. First, an investigation of staff experience and viewpoints demonstrate significant usage of health IT systems with positive outcomes on quality and patient care. The respondents also reported improved quality, patient management, and overall delivery. Similarly, other studies show that implementing health IT systems positively impacts outcomes on nursing time. For example, even though documentation time is likely to increase, the system will redirect nurses to spend more time in care activities of value, such as one-on-one time with the patient and enhanced inter-professional communication. In summation, implementing various health IT systems is directly linked to positive clinical outcomes and benefits for nursing practice outcomes.
