Academic Success and Professional Development Plan
The nursing practice consists of different specialty areas the nurses have to choose depending on the specialty that one selects depending on their passion. The paper will compare two nursing specialties, the reason for choosing the primary specialty, and an organization that resonates with the chosen specialty.
Specialty Comparison
The two specialties that need a comparison to meet the assignment requirement are psychiatrist mental health and pediatric nursing. The reason for selecting psychiatric mental health is that it is an essential specialty that helps intervene for mental health conditions for patients of all ages. According to Chapman et al. (2018), the main role that psychiatric nurses have to patients includes disease assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the different patients prevailing mental disorders. However, psychiatric nurses only intervene for mental health-related issues and cannot treat other illnesses. Other roles that psychiatric nurses possess include performing family education and identifying the most appropriate treatment for the condition to avoid adverse effects like committing suicide for patients suffering from depression. As all nurses have a role in advocating for the well-being of a community or individuals, the psychiatric nurses also engage in policymaking to ensure that these patients’ rights are not overlooked especially for patients in rural and underserved areas. However, a pediatric nurse’s main role is intervening in adolescents, infants, and children’s treatment and medical care in both in-patient and out-patient clinical settings Brady et al. (2021). The pediatric nurse’s main role is to ensure that they assess their patients’ conditions, observe vital signs and provide patient education to the patient’s parents. Also, pediatricians’ role is to research issues facing these children below 18 years to ensure that they offer patient-centered, evidence-based practices.
Reason for Choosing the Specialty
The reason for choosing psychiatric nursing for the assessment is that most nursing students do not embrace the specialty. That is regardless of the rising cases of mental health complications worldwide, thus leading to the deteriorating status of the patients. According to World Health Organization (2022), in 2019, approximately 970 million worldwide have mental-related disorders, the most common being depression and anxiety. However, due to the disruption that Covid-19 brought to the world population, the depression state rose by 28 percent, while anxiety disorder rose by 26 percent in 2020 (WHO, 2022). However, due to a lack of knowledge and appropriate education on the effect of mental disorders, most patients fail to seek mental health condition interventions despite different effective treatment and prevention options.
Most fellow students disagreed with the need to specialize in nursing psychiatry since they believe that social workers and psychologists can intervene better for these patients. However, others resonated with my ideas on the essentiality of nursing psychiatry. Hence, the local, state, or federal medical departments should emphasize the need for nurses to enroll in mental-health-related courses, especially psychiatric, to reduce the mortality and morbidity rates associated with the condition.
Healthcare Organization
The organization I choose is the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), which is dedicated to catering to better lives for Americans with mental illnesses. NAMI is an essential organization since it provides patient advocacy, education, and awareness (NAMI, n.d). One thing I like about NAMI is that apart from offering mental-health patients awareness and education, the organization goes a step further to develop young adults and youths’ resources, considering that the age group has an increased rate of mental health status. Also, NAMI provides up-to-date materials that can be useful for research to provide patient-centric services, especially to the underrepresented patient populations. The best way I can be part of NAMI is by participating in their national convention and awareness events and helping during their fundraiser events that aim to increase funds for the organization to improve its function.
Conclusion
The paper has evaluated two nursing specialties, the reason for choosing the primary specialty, and an organization that resonates with the chosen specialty.
