Developing an academic and professional network is essential for advanced nursing students as it provides resourceful individuals to help them attain set goals and career progression. The academic and professional network can consist of individuals and teams that are critical and will help one attain better academic outcomes and develop a requisite professional system in different situations. As such, I have identified and secured the participation of the following professional and academic individuals as the foundation of my network. The network will be essential in clarifying my vision for success and will provide guidance from today and in the future.

She is also willing to provide valuable advice and guidance, answer questions, help me with troubleshooting problems, and offer direction on navigating the MSN program and the profession of nursing. She will be instrumental in preparing me to become a future APRN.

Mr. Eddie Osuagwu is a mental health care provider trained as a masters prepared Licensed professional counselor (LPC) to provide therapy to families, individuals, and groups and treat emotional problems, mental and behavioral disorders. As an LPC, he helps individuals resolve issues and provides client-centered therapy. Mr. Osuagwu works with individuals, couples, families, and groups to provide counseling for substance abuse, learning disabilities, and psychoanalysis. He is also a great teacher, and the skills I will learn from him will help me be a good APRN and psychotherapist.

Ms. Jones is one of my mentors at work who is supportive of my pursuit of an advanced degree in nursing. She offers advice and guidance on nursing management, such as developing policies and procedures, and on administration, such as how to budget for a nursing unit and staffing. As a mentor, she teaches me the importance of collaborating with other healthcare professionals while overseeing the day-to-day operations of a nursing department and communicating between the nursing and medical teams and other healthcare professionals throughout the organization. These lessons are beneficial to me as a practicing nurse and will also be helpful to me as a future APRN.

Dr. Odo is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse(APRN) who is a primary care provider and is at the forefront of providing mental health care services to the public. She is an APRN who has met advanced educational and clinical practice requirements. She offers mental health services, medication-assisted treatment, substance Abuse Individual /group Counseling, DOT / Non-DOT Drug Screens, case management, and vaccine shots in a community-based setting. I feel that acquiring these skills will be of great importance as a practicing nurse and a future APRN. She is also my mentor.

Module 2 | Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

Maintenance of academic and professional integrity are essential aspects of ethics for students and even professionals. While learners have a duty to use a host of tools to detect grammatical errors and plagiarism, professions should maintain integrity in their workplaces as nurses based on a code of conduct’s requirement (Emmerich, 2019). The purpose of this section is to discuss tools that students can deploy to attain academic integrity of their scholarly work. The section discusses the interaction between academic integrity and writing as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. The section also illustrates practices that students can use to promote integrity and professional ethics for workers.

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

Relationship Between Academic Integrity and Writing

Academic integrity entails fundamental values like fairness, honesty, trust and being responsible for one’s actions. The essence is that academic integrity and writing are inseparable and implore one to consider deploying moral and honest practices in their works and academic environment that involve writing. Academic integrity provides the foundation for professional ethics in literary works and real workplace situation. For instance, a nurse who observes integrity in writing their school work is likely to show honest in their professional practice and follow the ethical frameworks suggested by professional entities.

Academic integrity is essential in writing as students must acknowledge ideas and works of others by quoting their names to avoid plagiarism. Writing relies on developing ideas and getting information from others scholars through their published works (Emmerich, 2019). Therefore, academic integrity compels students or writers to offer credit to other authors through demonstrating honesty with information attained from their published sources. Failure to acknowledge these aspects leads to plagiarism which is a serious academic integrity issue and even crime.

Relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics

Professional practices denote a set of conduct and behavior which defines a profession which requires compliance. Scholarly ethics relate to integrity and accuracy that are critical in development of written publications for sale or general utilization. Professional practices and scholarly ethics have a close relationship as professionalism emanates from ideas developed using evidence-based scholarly articles to provide frameworks for effective decision-making among individuals in a certain profession like nursing (De Graaf, 2019). The implication is that an individual with robust scholarly ethics possesses strong skills that can be used in development of high level aspects and standards of professional practice. Having scholarly ethics builds confidence, creativity, and innovativeness in doing things that in turn can have substantial impact on professional practice.

Using Grammarly, Safe Assign, and Paraphrasing in enhancing academic Integrity

The use of software like Grammarly and Safe Assign as well as paraphrasing enhances academic integrity as it allows one to proofread their work, correct anomalies, and ensure that they do not plagiarize or “copy and paste” information from sources to their papers. Paraphrasing and Safe Assign are critical tools that allow students to avoid plagiarism in their academic work (Garza & Parnther, 2018). Paraphrasing helps placing an author’s ideas in a different way instead of copying and pasting from the original text. This ensures that one’s work is protected and their ideas acknowledged as part of academic integrity. The implication is that one must use these tools to enhance their academic integrity in their writing.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

As observed, maintenance of academic integrity is critical for advanced nursing students taking the MSN program. One must maintain academic integrity and ethics using relevant tools as a student and later on as a professional nurse in their practice/. Therefore, in this part, I highlight the strategies that I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics in academic work as a student of the MSN program and professional work as a nurse during my career. The description includes resources and approaches that I will use a student and professional nurse.

Academic Work as a Student of the MSN Program

As an advanced nursing student pursuing the MSN program, it is essential to attain integrity and maintain ethical standards as required by university rules. In this case, I intend to pursue a raft of strategies. The initial strategy is to ensure that I prepare well for all lessons and coursework activities. This will entail making consultation with instructors, conducting personal research on subjects and topical areas, and leveraging online resources as well as discussion forums with peers (Anoopa et al, 2019). The second strategy would be to practice integrity by acknowledging other people’s works and ideas borrowed from scholarly sources to prevent possible plagiarism. Thirdly, I intend to enhance my writing abilities, analytical skills and use of grammar mechanics to ensure that I produce high quality and well-researched work during the course.

Professional Work as a Nurse in My Career

Nurses as professionals are expected to demonstrate ethical conduct, integrity and honesty when dealing with patients (de Graaf, 2019). In this case, I intend to improve my professional ethics by attaining further training on ethics and integrity, advancing my career through attainment of a terminal degrees and adhering to set organizational policies and code of conduct requirements. Advanced education will provide me with more skills and ensure that I apply them in my nursing practice.

Review of Resources and Approaches

Students and professional nurses have an array of resources that they can use to maintain integrity and ethics in their areas of practice and learning environment (Anoopa et al, 2019). Therefore, I intend to utilize materials from the library and online sources like webinars, attend practice lessons to acquire skills and use technology to gather information and best practices to model as an ethical student. I will reference previous work and gain knowledge as well as become familiar with aspects like examinations.

As a professional nurse, I will employ and adhere to existing code of conduct, organizational policies and submit to more training where necessary to attain quality outcomes. I will also attend professional seminars and workshops to equip myself with more knowledge and leverage teamwork as well as inter-professional collaborations to attain better patient outcomes. These strategies and resources are fundamental to attaining expected quality care and a professional image the inspires confidence in the nursing profession.

Conclusion

Nursing students and professional must maintain integrity in their academic work and ethics in their practice environment. As such, this section elaborates the strategies that I will use to attain these aspects as a student and professional nurse. The reflection demonstrates a host of tools and strategies that one can leverage to main integrity as a student and later on as a professional nurse.

I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (or currently preferred) specialty and second-preferred specialty.  I have also developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I can become a member of this organization.
