NURS 6053 Module 4 Week 7 Discussion Workplace Environment Assessment

Civility in a workplace entails the social norms and rules that create a positive and productive environment where all employees get satisfaction. Civility evokes words and phrases like courtesy, tolerance and accommodation, diversity and inclusion and rational approach to conflicts (Broome & Marshall, 2021). However, based on the workplace assessment report, my organization or workplace can be considered uncivil because it had a score of 50%. The responses from my colleagues were mainly “neutral” while others responded by “somewhat true” responses. These responses show that the environment is not healthy and neutrality implies that the nurses were not willing to associate the workplace with anything positive but negativity. Uncivil workplace environment leads to poor patient outcomes (ANA, 2022).

The report is categorical that the workplace is uncivil and does not encourage any positivity. The respondents mentioned the need for increased employee engagement and participation in decision-making, the need for motivation and morale as the employees are overburdened by the workload and their views are never considered (Hossny & Sabra, 2020). The workplace is considered uncivil because it lacks an effective staff orientation protocol and nurses do not participate in training as well as workshops to enhance their skills and get new practice knowledge to offer quality care interventions (Clark, 2019). The workers in the facility are leaving while others prefer working on part-time basis because of the low levels of engagement and feeling not appreciated or recognized by the management.

One incident of incivility that I experienced in the workplace recently was an altercation between the nurse manager and a new nurse who reported late for work. The manager was furious and demanded an explanation from the nurse before all people in the unit, including a patient and their family which had come for a routine visit. However, the manager could not listen to the explanation and warned the new nurse over never to come late or risk the sack. This was uncivil for the manager to confront the nurse instead of finding out by calling her to the office to explain. The new nurse quit at the end of the month because of she felt not valued based on how the manager approached and solved the issue.

Discussion: Workplace Environment Assessment
How healthy is your workplace?

You may think your current organization operates seamlessly, or you may feel it has many issues. You may experience or even observe things that give you pause. Yet, much as you wouldn’t try to determine the health of a patient through mere observation, you should not attempt to gauge the health of your work environment based on observation and opinion. Often, there are issues you perceive as problems that others do not; similarly, issues may run much deeper than leadership recognizes.

There are many factors and measures that may impact organizational health. Among these is civility. While an organization can institute policies designed to promote such things as civility, how can it be sure these are managed effectively? In this Discussion, you will examine the use of tools in measuring workplace civility.

To Prepare:

Review the Resources and examine the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory, found on page 20 of Clark (2015).
Review and complete the Work Environment Assessment Template in the Resources.
By Day 3 of Week 7
Post a brief description of the results of your Work Environment Assessment. Based on the results, how civil is your workplace? Explain why your workplace is or is not civil. Then, describe a situation where you have experienced incivility in the workplace. How was this addressed? Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 6 of Week 7
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by sharing ideas for how shortcomings discovered in their evaluations and/or their examples of incivility could have been managed more effectively.
