NURS 6053 Personal Nursing Leadership Philosophies Essay Assignment

Leaders are instrumental in organizational transformation and keeping their followers committed to delivering excellence. In health care, the role of leaders is critical in practice change, motivation, strategic planning, and innovation. However, it is challenging to influence the organization and followers positively if leaders do not understand their strengths and weaknesses. The CliftonStrengths Assessment is a useful tool for leaders to evaluate their strengths and behaviors that require improvement. The purpose of this paper is a personal reflection of leadership focusing on core values, personal mission and vision statement, analysis of assessment results, and a development plan for behavior change.

A Description of Core Values

The interpretation of leadership differs contextually and among people. Despite these variations, effective leadership is demonstrated by empowerment and development. Irrespective of the leadership style, leaders should empower and develop their followers and organizations. An effective way of empowering followers is active engagement, delegation, and modeling desirable behaviors. The other core value of a leader is positive influence. According to Broome and Marshall (2021), leaders have a professional responsibility to transform organizations by creating new ways that work, such as guiding change and leading innovation. Consequently, they should analyze their followers’ desires and strengths and influence them to work productively and achieve a shared vision. Leaders should also be empathetic and communicate effectively. Embracing these values enables them to develop and sustain relationships that foster interprofessional collaboration. Communication also enables followers to understand goals, responsibilities, and expectations.

Personal Mission and Vision Statement

A mission expresses an individual’s or organization’s purpose while a vision describes a desired future position.

Clifton Strengths Assessment Analysis

Effective leaders should understand their strengths and behaviors. The assessment provides a basic sense of abilities that allows individuals and leaders to understand their natural talents and areas they should focus on to achieve consistent success. My top five themes are restorative, empathy, adaptability, strategic, and activator. The restorative theme characterizes an individual who loves to solve problems. It involves a determination to analyzing issues, identifying what is wrong, and finding a suitable solution. Empathy is central to emotional and social intelligence since it is all about understanding own and others’ feelings and responding effectively (Prezerakos, 2018). Adaptability denotes living in the moment and responding willingly to situational demands. Adaptive leaders expect change and look forward to coping with it. The strategic them is a distinct way of thinking. Strategic thinkers can find patterns in complex situations and come out with alternatives. Strategic leaders also excel in planning and responding to change (Naamati Schneider, 2020). The final theme, activator, is the conviction that only actions lead to performance. Through action, individuals and leaders can learn and grow and are usually judged by what they do rather than what they say or think.

Behaviors that I should Strengthen

Behavior improvement implies becoming a better individual and leader overall. One of the behaviors I would wish to strengthen is empathy. I should be more experienced in understanding others’ feelings and how mine affect other people’s attitudes and behaviors. Empathetic leaders are emotionally intelligent, implying they can manage their feelings and emotions. Emotional intelligence also improves decision-making, satisfaction with work, and professional commitment (Prezerakos, 2018). The other behavior I wish to change is adaptability. The current practice evolves rapidly and requires nursing professionals who cope effectively. Adaptation also improves nurses’ attitude towards work; hence, they cannot be emotionally or mentally drained. Adaptive individuals are also less susceptible to workplace stresses, conflicts, and burnout.

Development Plan: Behavior Improvement and Achieving Personal Vision

Various interventions will be used simultaneously to catalyze behavior change and enable me to achieve my vision. The first component of the personal development plan is a willingness to grow, which will be achieved through continuous learning to update my knowledge and skills. I should also be more open to exposure to differences to develop empathy and adaptability. The exposure will help me to connect with diverse people closely hence a better understanding of their perspectives, behaviors, and needs. Leaders also develop by interacting with diverse and experienced professionals. Effective and visionary leaders establish healthy relationships and seek opportunities for leading and mentoring others (Moore Foundation, n.d.). Such interactions allow them to understand people and issues better as they improve relationships, skills, and worldviews.

Conclusion

Health care organizations require visionary and transformational leadership to achieve their visions and deliver excellent services. As a result, leaders should understand their behaviors and leadership strengths to apply them effectively. The CliftonStrengths Assessment allows leaders to assess their strengths and behaviors and provide the top five themes. As described in this paper, my top five themes are restorative, empathy, adaptability, strategic, and activator. Although it is crucial to improve in all areas, empathy and adaptability are the priority areas. Continuous growth, exposure to differences, and leading and mentoring others will help me to improve and achieve my vision.

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

To Prepare:

Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.
