The appropriate drug psychopharmacology for a person with major depressive disorder (MDD) and alcohol abuse is a combination of Acamprosate with escitalopram. Acamprosate reduces the effects of addiction while escitalopram is antidepressant. The medications are safe to use together (Donoghue et al., 2022). Antidepressants such as Bupropion are contraindicated in persons with comorbid alcohol abuse and MDD because of the risk of seizure or liver damage (Li et al., 2020).
