FNP Practicum Objectives

Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP) pursuing the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competence needed to advance nursing practice. Rivaz et al. (2021) stated that DNP aims at preparing nurse practitioners to perform in the most advanced level of clinical practice. Additionally, the DNP program prepares nurses to translate and apply research findings into clinical practices. According to Ljungbeck et al. (2019), the entry of nurse practitioners into the healthcare system has significantly improved patient quality. Therefore, DNP students specializing in FNP results in the delivery of person-centered care, meeting patients’ healthcare needs. This discussion focuses on DNP- FNP practicum objectives.

FNP PRACTICUM OBJECTIVES: Develop 10 SMART OBJECTIVES: PART I INSTRUCTIONS
Students will develop Practicum Objectives for each Family Nurse Practitioner
Practicum Course. The purpose of Practicum Objectives is to guide the
practicum experience and professional development as the student matriculates
through the FNP Practicum. Students will formulate objectives related to
each practicum course and will incorporate the course objectives/competencies.
The practicum learning objectives must meet the learning outcomes of the
practicum course, the Doctor of Nursing Program, and be
consistent with current Doctor of Nursing Practice Essentials (AACN, n.d) and
the current National Task Force on Quality Nurse Practitioner Education
criteria (NTF, n.d).
The Practicum Objectives: Part I affords the student the opportunity to
develop measurable practicum objectives that are consistent with the practicum
focus. Practicum Objectives Part I will be completed and submitted to the
Practicum Objectives Part I assignment submission link in Canvas. The
Practicum Objectives will be evaluated according to the Practicum Objectives:
Part I Grading Rubric. Multiple revisions may be necessary and multiple
submission are permitted in this assignment drop box.
Once Practicum Objectives are revised according to Practicum Faculty
recommendations, the student will then submit the Practicum Objectives to the
Practicum Preceptor for approval. After Practicum Objectives have been
approved by the Practicum Course Faculty and Preceptor, the student will
upload the final version into Typhon NPST External Documents (See DNP Handbook).
Example: I will complete 5 well baby exams with a focus on anticipatory
guidance and vaccinations according to the CDC guidelines (CDC, 2017). I am
in a family practice setting this semester where my preceptor performs
frequent well baby checks and I will be able to accomplish this goal by the
end of the semester. (Meets NURS 730: FNP Practicum I Course Learning
Objective 2).
