TO PREPARE:
- Review the readings in the White, Dudley-Brown, and Terhaar text. With your current health care organization, or an organization you are targeting for your DNP Project, in mind, consider the area(s) of greatest challenge with regard to translating and applying evidence for a practice change initiative, e.g., leadership, technology, collaboration, stakeholder buy-in. Focus on the relevant text chapter(s) in your Discussion preparation.
- Consider theories and best practice recommendations for addressing your identified challenges and barriers to translating and applying evidence that would support practice change initiatives.
- Reflect on the philosophy of nursing practice that you developed in Modules 1–2. Consider your role as a DNP in creating an organizational culture that embraces evidence-based practice and quality improvement.
With these thoughts in mind …
BY DAY 3 OF WEEK 11
Post an explanation of the challenges and barriers to translating and applying evidence for practice change in your target health care organization. Briefly explain your issue(s) of concern and describe specific approaches for addressing these challenges. Explain how you view your role as a DNP in creating a health care culture that promotes translation of evidence for quality improvement and explain why. Then, recommend actions and activities you could model and lead, including through an EBP QI project, to advocate for quality improvement and social change in nursing. Be specific and provide examples.

NURS 8114 WEEK 11 Sample
When translating my clinical issue of interest in creating mental health awareness to reduce suicide rates, I will likely encounter various barriers and challenges. Some barriers I might face in my organization include organizational and individual factors. Potential organizational barriers include lack of leadership support, lack of staff training on the importance of mental health awareness, limited time for staff, and limited organization resources (Alatawi et al., 2020). Examples of limited organizational resources include a shortage of finances and healthcare providers to support mental health awareness initiatives. Individual barriers likely to hinder my intervention include staff attitude and stigma towards mental health. The staff may resist change, especially since it will add to their responsibilities of educating individuals about mental health.
The identified barriers can be addressed by enlightening the organizational management and staff on the benefits of increasing mental health awareness in reducing mental disorders and suicide in the general population. Enlightening the hospital’s management team can improve their support to increase staff engagement in the proposed initiative (McArthur et al., 2021). Furthermore, it can persuade them to provide the resources needed to implement mental health awareness activities in the organization. Encouraging the management will motivate them to allow the staff to participate in mental health awareness activities, which will address the barrier of limited time.
As a DNP nurse, I am equipped with knowledge of EBP, advanced clinical practice, and health systems. I have a responsibility to contribute to research through clinical inquiry initiatives that improve the delivery of health care and health outcomes. Besides, I have the role of assessing my organization’s readiness for change, translating evidence into practice, and supporting research initiatives when there is a need to generate new knowledge to address an issue (Graves et al., 2021). Using an EBP project, I can model and lead a quality improvement aimed at increasing staff awareness of the importance of mental health and reducing stigma towards mental disorders. This can help them provide better mental health care to patients without discrimination.
