NURS 8114 WEEK 3 DISCUSSION POST
The assigned interdisciplinary theory for this discussion is Disease causation theory. It comprises several theories/models, which include the Miasma theory, Germ theory, Epidemiological triangle, Web of causation, the theory of general susceptibility, and the socio-environmental approach. Miasma theory proposes that breathing in certain areas can cause disease, like the air around swamps, marshes, and air at night times (Dharmashree et al., 2020). According to the Germ theory, health problems are thought to be the product of living organisms that enter the body through food, water, air, or insects/animal bites.
The Epidemiological triangle proposes that disease results from an imbalance of interactions between three vital components: Host, Agent, and Environment. Web of causation theory argues that diseases develop from a complex interaction of multiple factors, which can be biophysical, social, or psychological, and may promote or hinder the disease at more than one point in the causal process (Dharmashree et al., 2020). Furthermore, the theory of general susceptibility seeks to establish why some social groups are more susceptible to disease and death. Lastly, the socio-environmental approach is concerned with the population rather than individuals, and it aims to identify the broad factors that make and keep people healthy.
The selected health issue is hypertension, a chronic illness that is on the rise in the world’s population. The Disease causation theory can be applied to establish the factors that lead to the development of hypertension in specific individuals and the population. For instance, the Web of Causation can be used to establish the complex interaction of multiple factors causing hypertension, like education level, income, poor diet, physical inactivity, alcohol, and smoking (Alrawahi et al., 2020). In addition, the theory of general susceptibility can be applied to understand why some ethnic or racial groups are more susceptible to hypertension and its complications than others.
