NURS 8114 Week 8 Discussion Post
When beginning my literature search on my critical question, I was uncertain whether I would identify articles that specifically addressed the issue of whether promoting mental health awareness reduces the incidence of suicide. I identified that a literature search is vital in addressing a clinical practice problem since one has to conduct an organized search to identify key literature on the specific topic problem. I learned that developing and refining a search strategy is fundamental to a successful and thorough literature search.
So far, I have retrieved a number of current peer-reviewed articles related to my critical question. I have developed a working search strategy in which the first step was to choose the search terms that will be used in the literature search. The search strategy included the likely search terms, keywords, and phrases. I obtained the keywords to use for the literature search from the critical question, and they included: ‘Mental health’, ‘Mental health awareness’, and ‘Suicide rates’. Using these search terms has helped to retrieve relevant articles from the research databases. In addition, I have learned to limit the literature search to peer-reviewed academic journals by limiting the database search to scholarly journals or academic journals. Furthermore, I limit the search to articles published within the past five years to ensure I retrieve current literature.
I recommend the Walden University Library, which contains a wide range of online research materials. It has databases of books, dissertations, journals, and videos to support learners’ scholarly needs. Nevertheless, I experienced issues with applying the Boolean logic to combine the key search terms. This is an issue that I greatly need help with on how to combine the search terms to retrieve relevant articles specific to my practice question. The Boolean operator has AND, OR, and NOT, which I found challenging when combining the search terms in the literature search.
