NURS 905 Model 5 Discussion: Organizational Systems Leadership
Various characteristics known to lead to effective leadership are often common to leaders who have been found effective (Cummings et al., 2021). Hence, leadership theories such as the trait theory have been built on this fact, stipulating that for leaders to be effective, they must possess certain leadership traits. This discussion presents the characteristics that Shackleton (based on Ernest Shackleton’s Way case study) possesses that made him an effective leader while providing examples indicating leadership effectiveness and how these characteristics fit in a healthcare/academic organization. The case study details his great polar journey, a 22-month ordeal he embarked on with his 27 crewmen in 1914.
Shackleton possessed various characteristics that made him an effective leader. These characteristics included empathy, agility, decision-making, and understanding the skills and limitations of each expedition member. Shackleton demonstrated empathy when he allowed a team member to have his daily ration when the food supply dwindled and ensured the lower ranks members had the warmest clothes and sleeping bags (pg 80). He also demonstrated agility and decision-making by guiding the team in extreme conditions. More so, he made the most out of each expedition member by understanding each member’s skills (pg 80). These characteristics contributed to his effectiveness as a leader since he guided the team through crisis.
The characteristics mentioned above fit in a healthcare/academic organization. Healthcare and academic organizations have different individuals working towards achieving similar goals, just as in this case. These individuals have to work as a team despite being in different ranks. For instance, healthcare and academic organization leaders should have the agility to lead the team in challenging times, have adequate decision-making skills, and understand the skills and limitations of each team member, hence ensuring each member is given a task that suits their skills, and make the best out of each member. Therefore, leaders in these organizations should possess these characteristics.
