Core Values

When developing one’s leadership styles or approaches, it is essential to analyze and incorporate core values as it allows one to know their personal biases and their effects on their leadership (Marshall & Broome, 2017). Imperatively, my core values shape my perspectives on issues, how I treat and regard others and shape my nursing philosophy as a nurse practitioner, first, and as a leader, second. My core values include honesty and genuineness, reliability and respect, inclusion and embracing diversity, and compassion. I believe that as a leader, these values ensure that one succeeds in all facets of care delivery. Leaders must show honesty and be dependable to earn trust and respect from their followers.

Demonstrating compassion and respect to all people, especially those that one leads, ensures that they return the same and increases their level of trust and confidence. The increasing diversity and need for culturally-competent care implore leaders in nursing to embrace inclusion and open-mindedness to reduce possible favoritism, discrimination and enhance understanding of patients, irrespective of their backgrounds and differences. As a leader, one must guide others as a team to accomplish set goals that focused on the delivery of best patient outcomes.

Personal Mission and Vision Statement

Leaders must develop mission and vision statements to help them attain great transformations among their teams for effective care delivery. My vision as a nurse leader is to lead teams and individuals to attain their ultimate potential and deliver best care to patients. My mission is to exceed expectations and be the best in my practice to inspire change and real transformation for all stakeholders. I believe that these statements are essential to nurturing the core values that I mentioned above as they require an honest and reliable individual who considers challenges and growth opportunities.

Summary & Analysis of Clifton-Strengths Assessment

The Clifton-Strengths assessment offer great insight into one’s personal strengths as a leader and even individual. The assessment entails five core themes or areas that demonstrate one’s core strengths or areas they excel the most (Gallup Inc., 2022). Based on the assessment, my strengths include being an include, showing positivity, having empathy, ability to woo, and valuing connectedness. As an include, I accept others and show awareness about those who may feel left out or ignored. I ensure that they also become part of the activities in my team. Positivity means that I am enthusiastic and upbeat which ensures that I get those close to me excited and ready to try out new ideas. The third theme is empathy which implies that I can sense other people’s feelings by placing myself in their circumstances to enhance my understanding. Further, I love meeting new people and convincing them to join my team or embrace my vision. Making connections is essential as it allows one to gain insights from others, irrespective of their current situations (Gallup Inc., 2022). Connectedness as a theme is related to the last two themes and implies that I have strong convictions in all links and associations that I make about people and things.

These themes demonstrate that I value people and I am people-centered leader who believes in driving a convincing and powerful vision among people, especially subordinates and other stakeholders. These themes indicate the need to believe and work through people as a team to deliver quality outcomes for patients. The analysis show that connectedness is essential in developing better approaches in difficult and challenging situations as a leader.

Strengthening Behaviors and Plan

Leaders need to evaluate the effectiveness of their approaches and their strengths to remain relevant in practice environment. In this case, there are different areas that I should strengthen based on the assessment. These include courage and humility. While it is obvious that I am a people’s person, having the courage to correct them is essential as it may not imply that they will distance themselves from me. The workplace environment for nurses poses serious challenges and emergencies that require nurses to not only have the courage but also the humility to encounter them. Today, emerging and reemerging infectious diseases pose challenges to the safety of healthcare providers as demonstrated during the Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Patients various condition need services and one may not have the courage to offer care because they lack humility. Leading people requires one to come down to their levels to understand issues impacting them.

My plan to improve in these areas include attending workshops and seminars, and secondly reading publications about the traits of influential leaders and their handling of challenges. I want to acquaint myself with how great leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama, and Florence Nightingale overcame hurdles to inspire generations to make the world a better place. These leaders demonstrated strongest abilities in patience and endured tough conditions to emerge at the top.

Conclusion

Developing personal leadership philosophy is a critical aspect of succeeding in nursing leadership. Great nurse leaders must comprehend their strengths to appreciate their weak areas and improve. Strong and successful leaders create visions and inspire followers to actualize it through performance. Therefore, this leadership philosophy paper gives me a path to pursue my leadership goals and attain expected quality care outcomes for patients.
