Physical Learning Environments Essay Discussion
Learning environments influence the learning attitudes, experiences, and educational outcomes among students. Learning environments are an integration of the physical, psychosocial, and pedagogical aspects that collectively intersect and contribute to the learning process (Closs et al., 2021). The physical learning environment encompasses physical spaces and structures such as classrooms, accompanying color, texture, lighting, air quality, suitable furniture, technology, and overall ergonomics (Closs et al., 2021). These learning spaces can enhance or inhibit the teaching and learning activities and experiences and thus are the basis for improvement strategies and innovations.

Various strategies can be adopted to optimize the utilization of learning environments and foster a positive learning experience among students. These include promoting a collaborative, collegial, and supportive environment with maximal student engagement and active learning (Shrestha et al., 2019). This may require measures that promote collaborative, interactive, and safe learning such as using modern and comfortable learning environments and infrastructure, appropriate classroom sizes, suitable furniture with flexible settings, and group-focused configuration (Closs et al., 2021). Barriers to positive learning experiences and outcomes such as student non-engagement and authoritarian and stressful environment that adversely affects the learning process should be addressed.
The nursing faculty can further be involved in decision-making regarding learning environments and their setup. Educators ought to set appropriate expectations on the utilization of the physical learning environment, optimize the physical learning environment as a structured activity in conformity with the student’s needs, determine learning locations that encourage interdisciplinary teaching, and utilize the guidelines of participatory ergonomics (Cooper et al., 2020). Continuous evaluation and monitoring of the physical learning environment should be performed to assess its effectiveness in promoting positive learning experiences. This will necessitate the involvement of the learners to obtain their views, attitudes, and preferences which result in the designing of satisfactory solutions to undermining factors.
