Practicum Journal: Authority Assignment Paper
My practicum project is mainly aimed at understanding the work-life balance for managers. As managers, we are encouraged to figure out the most effective way that we can protect ourselves from getting too far into our end of that equation. It is crucial to avoid too much work as this normally leads to burnout. Workaholism as demonstrated through evidence-based practice is not sustainable especially when we want to maintain and promote our emotional, physical, and mental health (Kelly et al., 2019). As such, leaders must analyze the factors associated with burnout and implement work-life balance strategies to promote the well-being of staff members.

Application of Leadership
In my professional life, as a way of promoting work-life balance, we prioritize effective change management in the work environment to ensure that it promotes innovation, employee satisfaction, and morale, avoids a stale environment, and creates new opportunities. The process of change management in my organization is done in three main phases. The first phase is known as the preparing approach, where the managers/leaders critically analyze the situation that needs change and conducts research to determine how the change can be achieved and what to expect (Mwakisaghu, 2019). The second phase is referred to as change management, which involves considering factors needed to be able to prepare, support, and engage stakeholders in the implementation of the change. In this phase, the manager also evaluates what’s being done to promote the change and the necessary adjustments needed. The last phase is known as the sustain outcomes phase, as it involves evaluating the progress of the organization with the change, and how to ensure that the change is adopted permanently to assume ownership and sustained outcome.
The process of change management within my organization is based on the implementation of effective strategic management principles. Such principles include prioritizing the need for change in promoting organizational goals and objectives. The other principle is leveraging strengths and capabilities rather than trying to change the organization into something that it is not (Kelly et al., 2019). The third principle is communication, which is essential in promoting a comprehensive understanding by my organization of what they are doing and making all employees part of the change. Other strategic management principles utilized by my organization in promoting effective change management are remaining flexible, raising the energy levels of employees, and investing in help from outside the organization.
Practicum Project Preparation
The main goal of my project is to promote a good work-life balance for managers and employees within my organization to increase employee satisfaction, and productivity and improve the image of the organization. The development of this project goal was based on the mission and vision of my organization which reiterates the need for us to become an unmatched leader in providing safe and quality services, in addition to reducing the cost of healthcare for the community members. To achieve the organization’s mission and vision, it is necessary to promote a good work-life balance for all the employees for them to be able to exhibit their full potential in promoting the quality and safety of care provided (Zwikael et al., 2018). Consequently, a good work-life balance also helps reduce the wastage of resources, which would otherwise increase the cost of healthcare provided. Generally, it is very necessary to ensure that the organization’s mission and vision, align with my project goals as this is a better way of promoting change that will help promote organization success based on achieved goals and objectives.
Leadership Video Reflection
The “Servant Leadership – Issue of Authority” video, mainly talks about how poor leadership skills contribute to managerial failure. However, with a servant leadership style, managers will be able to positively influence their followers in achieving the organization’s goals and objectives (“Servant Leadership – the Issue of Authority [Cc],” 2016). The first lesson learned from this video is that leaders should have the legitimate right to influence their followers rather than forcing it upon them to command others against their will. For instance, the speaker talks about two types of authority, formal and informal. In this case, the formal authority has been described as positional authority, whereas informal authority is where the followers give the leader the right to make decisions in their life. This leads to the second lesson, despite having authority over others due to your position, it is necessary to exhibit informal authority, by serving others so that they can trust you, and are willing to give you the power to influence their life. This was exhibited by Jesus, when he displayed humility by washing the feet of his disciples, despite knowing that he has power and authority over them. As such, it is important to avoid being dictators but rather serve others with humility and respect as a way of promoting servant leadership in the workplace.
