Professionalism and Social Media
Professionalism and Social Media
Social media is one of the most prevalent and used forms of communication at personal and professional levels for communication. Social media has beneficial and harmful effects on the nursing profession and nurse practitioners must ensure that they use it based on existing ethical, professional, and legal mandates and requirements (Lopez & Cleary, 2018). Social media affects confidentiality among nurses and patients. Privacy is compromised on social media networks, and nurses should prevent compromising patient’s privacy and confidentiality of their personal and protected health information (Edge, 2017). The purpose of this paper is to describe inappropriate social media posts that I have made and their impact on the professional and personal development as a nurse practitioner.
Inappropriate Conversations and Posts
Nursing professionals are held in high regards and standards implying that nurses are expected to maintain professionalism both on and when away from work to attain respect from their employers, patients, and community. A review of my social media networks shows that I rarely post issues and information that are controversial and may negatively impact the profession and my reputation. However, few images of enjoying drinks with friends during weekends and shouting unprintable literature may look unprofessional (Edge, 2017). Further, I have posted a picture of my bedside situation where a patient was capture complaining about the long hours that I have to work and yet no one appreciates the efforts in the organization. As a nursing professional, I need to desist from posting pictures that may suggest inappropriate conduct and those depicting my patients while receiving treatment. Not only can these small issues affect my reputation and image as a nurse, but can impact the profession as a whole.
Nurses’ Responsibility, Personal Conduct and HIPAA
Nurses are trusted and most critical component of the healthcare delivery process and sector. Nurses deal with patients at different levels and in a host of situations. Nurses have a code of conduct developed by professional organizations like the American Nurses Association to guide their behaviors. Nurses are considered to be among the most honest professional with high ethical standings. Patients trust in nurses to be honest with them, care for them, and advocate for them while offering the best care possible (Lopez & Cleary, 2018). Imperatively, nurses have a duty to conduct themselves in a professional way to gain confidence and trust of patients and health populations that they serve. Nurses must maintain the provisions of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA), especially the privacy rule that looks at protected health information (PHI). Nurses should not disclose patients’ PHI and doing so would be a violation of HIPAA rules.
Unprofessional conduct may include sharing patient information to the family members without their express consent. Nurses need to understand that personal health data is private and confidential and can only be disclosed based on informed consent from the patient. Sharing patient images and pictures on social media believing that they only depict the nurse while at work constitutes violation of the HIPAA rules (NCSBN, 2018). Unethical considerations happen when a nurse shares patient information with her friends if they are celebrities admitted to their hospitals and she is the one caring for them, while she posts because of excitement, she breaches the existing HIPAA provisions on the need to protect patient information.
Christian View
Social media can be used to enhance sharing of stories and aspects that promote human dignity and values from a Christian perspective. Communication and connection are inherent parts of one’s life and social media helps people grow in several ways, especially through encouraging hope through Christian teachings and scriptural materials. Several areas of my social media activities mirror Christian values associated with respecting human value and dignity for all people, irrespective of their backgrounds. Posting Biblical verses, giving hope to those in acute situation, and demonstrating cultural sensitive care are all focused on enhancing inherent human value and dignity. My posts going to church, participating in communal activities, and speaking about issues like inequality and health disparities to enhance equal and improved access to care all illustrate the Christian perspective of respecting human value and dignity (Lopez & Cleary, 2018). I should improve in areas like posting images when in high spirits with my friends after having fun and nice time. Further, I should also desist from posting my workplace; especially where captions show patients.

Conclusion
Social media remains a key tool for nurses and other professionals to enhance their interactions with patients, have shared decision making approaches, and improve care quality. However, nurses must ensure that they follow set guidelines on use of social media. They should use it appropriately to advance quality care.
