Nursing theories guide the nursing practice as they provide frameworks or models to help nurses approach patient care while interacting with their environments to attain quality outcomes. Two critical theories that align with my specialty in nursing leadership are Imogene King’s goal attainment theory and Sister Callista Roy’s adaptation model (Smith, 2019). The goal attainment theory focuses on the level of interactions and relationship between nurses and patients based on three areas that include personal, interpersonal or group, and society or social. King’s model advances that interactions, perception, communication, stress, role, self, growth and development are essential. The theory implores both nurse and patients to leverage knowledge and information to build robust relationship and work collaboratively to achieve set goals (Adib-Hajbaghery & Tahmouresi, 2018). On its part, Roy’s adaptation theory asserts that human beings are an open system that responds to environmental stimuli based on cognitive and regulatory mechanism for individuals. However, groups require stabilizer an innovator control mechanism to adapt to certain situations.

At the core of these theories is the need for building relationships at personal and group levels. Both theories emphasize the interactive role and sharing of information between nurses and patients. Like King’s attain theory, Roy’s model emphasizes the need to attain certain care goals through creating collaborative interactions between patients and nurses as well as other health care providers (DeNisco & Barker, 2018). King’s theory stresses the importance of interaction and the environmental factors that impact it like perception, judgment and personal space. Similarly, Roy’s theory stresses the need to understand one’s stimuli in their setting and respond to them; especially focal stimulus that allows patients to adapt better behaviors to attain set care goals.

However, the two theories differ as Roy’s model is more focused on using the environment to change behavioral aspects in a patient to achieve care while King’s approach emphasizes the critical role of the goal itself. King’s model shows that patient and nurse should communicate better through effective interpersonal interactions. Conversely, Roy believes that understanding the environment and adapting to it is better than the interactions between nurses and patients. Imogene King’s goal attainment theory is more relevant to my future role as a nurse leader as it emphasizes the need to set goals and understand the associated environmental factors to achieve them (Smith, 2019). The goal attainment theory focuses on development of relationship between nurses and patients based on communication and working together.
