Death Dying and Grief

When considering suicide and euthanasia, it is important to reflect on the analysis of the sin of suicide. Suicide is an act that takes one’s own life and Euthanasia is a mercy killing. In order to come to reflect upon the gravity of whether they are sinful, there is the need for one to look into the Catholic Church’s Catechism. The Catechism states “2281 Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is requirement of natural justice that he should renders an account of it to Him Who grants him the gift of life (Madadin et al., 2020). Compared with the duration and scope of His eternal plan, human life is brief and limited. But this restricted temporality opens up the hope of eternity.”

From the reading, it is important to note that not all religions view suicide as a sin. For example, in Buddhism, Notre Dame professor Jeanette Anne Mrsic-Flogel points out that “Prince Siddhartha…killed himself by voluntarily starving himself to death” and that such an act is regarded as meritorious.  In some situations, suicide may even be seen as an act of compassion. That said, many major religions do consider suicide to be a serious offense (Vilpert et al., 2020). In Christianity, for example, suicide is traditionally seen as a violation of the fifth commandment: “You shall not kill.” Catholicism in particular views suicide as a sin.

Personally, I do not agree to suicide and euthanasia. There is a lot of debate surrounding the topic of suicide and euthanasia and whether or not they are morally wrong. I believe that both suicide and euthanasia are morally wrong for a variety of reasons. Suicide is fundamentally selfish. It is an act that seeks to end one’s own life, without regard for the impact it will have on those left behind. In contrast, euthanasia is an act that seeks to end another person’s life, usually with their consent. While this may appear to be more humane than suicide, it still ultimately denies that person the right to live their life as they see fit.
