Reflection on Learning and Practice Readiness

Reflection on Learning and Practice Readiness

One essential role of the DNP-prepared nurse is leadership in their practice organization. DNP nurses are required to apply their leadership competencies and skills to strengthen practice and healthcare delivery, facilitate the improvement of patient outcomes and provide the highest level of competence in nursing care in complex clinical environments. Reflection on learning facilitates self-awareness, expands knowledge, assesses learning goals, and helps identify knowledge gaps. This discussion reflects on the lessons learned and the contribution of this course in preparing me to practice at the DNP level.

My thinking was significantly changed in this course related to transformational leadership to influence contemporary organizations. First and foremost, I appreciated the role of different leadership approaches in nursing practice. Additionally, I have learned that different approaches work best for different situations. Therefore, the leader is supposed to identify the leadership approach that can be best applied in a current situation, thus promoting success and achieving goals and objectives.

Transformational leadership focuses on the behavior and attributes of the leader required to motivate and empower team members (Collins et al., 2020). I have appreciated the elements of transformational leadership, including inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, and idealized influence. Each of these elements plays a significant role in leadership, and as a leader in my capacity, I have to ensure that I integrate them into my roles and activities.

Furthermore, I have appreciated that facilitating change in an organization requires the contribution of an interprofessional team. In addition, the team is empowered to play their roles effectively and flexibly and work together towards meeting the goals and objectives of the practice change project. According to Stucky et al. (2022), leaders should have the necessary skills and competencies to lead practice change projects and bridge healthcare quality and safety. Similarly, I intend to use my leadership and management skills to lead interprofessional teams in practice change projects. I will also employ communication comportment, developing shared values and enhancing mutual respect for all team members. Additionally, I will enhance collaboration through effective communication and shared decision-making among the team members.

The lessons learned in this course have significantly contributed to my preparedness and readiness to practice collaboratively as an innovative DNP nurse. The DNP nurse is supposed to practice at the highest level in the practice setting, thus needs to uphold high standards of ethics and maintain a professional demeanor (Iserson, 2020). Professional ethics means upholding ethical conduct and fostering an environment whereby other team members can uphold ethical conduct. As a leader, I have been adequately prepared to include professional ethics in my leadership.

Additionally, I am now ready to collaborate with other professional members of the team to facilitate and implement practice change projects across healthcare institutions. Collaboration with the interprofessional team enhances project success and team members’ involvement and contribution in the practice change projects. Collaboration also enhances the improvement of project outcomes and ensures the needs of all interprofessional teams are involved in the project. It also makes it easier to obtain feedback from the team members and thus incorporate it into the project plan to enhance the success and improvement of similar projects in the future.

The course relating to transformational leadership and influencing contemporary organizations has significantly improved my leadership competency as a DNP nurse. It has also prepared me to play my leadership role at any practice organization effectively. Additionally, the course has enabled me to identify my leadership competencies, skills, strengths, and weaknesses. I have also appreciated the integration of leadership and management in addressing practice problems.
