Advancing the quality of primary care is vital in any healthcare setting, prompting the nurse to invest in education to meet such threshold. The primary caregivers are at the frontline in offering preventive care services to the public (Norful et al., 2018). These duties imply that APRNs have a major role in advancing healthcare and creating a positive change toward safety and quality of healthcare. As earlier highlighted, nursing education is an expectation of each nurse to meet the pinnacle of care in healthcare. While the expectation of a graduate nurse would be different from the expectation of a doctorate student, all tend to have critical roles in the health care system (Norful et al., 2018). Therefore, the purpose of this assignment is to address the roles of advanced nursing practice.


APN Roles

            An APRN is a nurse with competent skills in nursing and has certifications in advanced nursing practice. These are types of RN nurses who have earned graduate-level degrees such as Masters in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). These are trained to undertake four major roles in nursing (Miller, 2019). Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP)

            NPs attend to patients in the outpatient setting, where these professionals carry out medical checkups and preventive care for their patients. Many patients are assigned to NPs as their primary health providers because they possess the required skills to attend to various health conditions of the patients (Miller, 2019). They see the patients concerning the routine health problems that may arise from time to time. These professionals are closest to patients because they understand the history of a problem and aim to meet the needs of the patients. They operate on an ethical standard that confines them to offer quality healthcare services during their practice.

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNM)

            These are nurse professionals skilled in the prenatal care setting. They attach significance to the expectant mothers throughout their pregnancy journey. For instance, they take expectant mothers through their clinics by offering effective advice and intervention that would successfully deliver the baby. While they help mothers in delivering babies, they also provide post-natal care to the mother and the baby after birth (Miller, 2019). They work in a team on nurse-midwives and physicians to offer effective pre-and post-natal care to expecting mothers. Gaining the CNM certification would imply that a nurse has advanced skills to undertake management in the prenatal setting.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

            CRNA is an advanced nurse practice nurse specializing in anesthesia. During the civil wars, these nurses were tasked with the role of giving anesthesia to wounded soldiers, and the name has been carried through ages to professional nurses in the healthcare setting. Today, CRNAs work in various settings such as operating rooms, obstetric care, pain management centers, public health centers, and outpatient surgery centers (Schorn et al., 2022). These nurses are different from anesthesiologists because they are graduate-level nurses, while anesthesiologists are medical doctors. In many cases, CRNAs always practice without physician supervision.  

Certified Nurse Specialist (CNS)

            This is a graduate-level registered nurse who is certified in the specialization of choice. Gaining this certification demonstrates professional skills in an advanced level of knowledge and clinical skills in the niche area of nursing (Norful et al., 2018). CNS prescribes medication and major focus on research, education, and consultation in general nursing.

The Rationale for Choosing CNP Nurse

            CNPs have a wider scope of practice as compared to CMS or CRNAs. They have a large impact on healthcare as they teach patients about the effective management of health problems in the post-discharge period and how they can maintain proper health throughout their lives. The advancement in healthcare delivery relies on the NPs as they offer primary care to a wide range of patients (Schorn et al., 2022). Their role highly relies on translation research to change basic research into an outcome. These outcomes must have a direct benefit on human health. The insights gained from advanced learning always provide them with better choices of healthcare delivery to patients.

            CNPs also deal with a wide range of patients implying they tend to learn about many healthcare issues affecting society. The increased skills in addressing more healthcare conditions allow them to fit in almost every part of healthcare delivery. Besides, they always have an adequate understanding of the patients, which allows them to give care to all patients. The nature of the role of the CNPs is essential in developing a sense of empathy and diverging to becoming a culturally competent care nurse (Schorn et al., 2022). Again, dealing with many patients also plays an important in developing their communication skills which is an essential role in clinical reasoning and heightening the patient-nurse relationship. The relationship between nurses and other health care workers in an institution also relies on effective communication skills. Therefore, CNPs can limit medical errors and increase patient care levels depending on the communication platform developed among health care professionals.

Plans for Clinical Practice

            After graduation, I would like to assume nurse practitioner roles in a busy institution to learn some of the unique skills that my profession will be adopted in the future. The learning will greatly impact my future role as a CNP nurse. For example, learning the art of language when dealing with a wide range of patients would effectively develop effective communication skills required in interprofessional collaboration among health care professionals (Schorn et al., 2022). The skill would be significant in advising and offering effective preventive care to patients. The skills would also allow me to solve conflicts arising at my place of work and teach other health care professionals the need to integrate effective communication skills. Besides, I will be able to improve and use my observation skills to meet the patients’ needs. I will be aligning my needs with observation skills to eradicate the urge to assume important issues affecting health care delivery.

            The idea of clinical practice has also changed after my graduation, depending on the type of nurse I would like to be in the healthcare delivery system. All the APN roles are important in a healthcare setting; however, my choice for CNP aligns with my need to offer a wide range of healthcare services (Torrens et al., 2020). Understanding each APN role in nursing prompted my choice of the CNP nurse as it has more areas of learning and designing effective measures to meet the patient’s needs. The role of the NPs houses all other remaining three roles of APN nurses implying that an NP is more advantaged in meeting patient’s outcomes irrespective of the healthcare setting.

Role Transition

            The transition from RN to NP will be one of the most significant transitions of roles I will be making in my nursing career. The transition would be faced with various challenges because of the shift in experience. I will be transitioning from an experienced registered nurse to an inexperienced, novice status NP role. The process might result in a change of professional identity because the normal way of operation as a registered nurse would change. Besides, there would instance of loss of confidence and fear of the impending roles and duties I will be overtaking in healthcare (Torrens et al., 2020). For instance, the duties of taking full responsibility for any intervention I will be giving the patient would entirely rely on my options. This implies that any small error made in my healthcare setting would be my problem, and I would face legal action.

            While the NP role would come with its challenges, I will use the power of my professional team in delivering healthcare and learning the expectations concerning my new role. This strategy will be important in teaming up with other NP professionals who have been in practice for a long time and learning how to manage my transition process (Torrens et al., 2020). Again, I will sign for medical seminars organized for APNs to boost my confidence in the practice and learn the modern skills defining the quality of healthcare delivery in any healthcare setting. Besides, these seminars will equip me with the leadership roles that would affect my relationship with fellow NPs or RNs within the healthcare setting.


            Drawing evidence from the above discussion, nurse transition is one of the important aspects that define improved skills in nurses. Any nurse would want to meet such a level where they have increased professionalism in creating a positive effect in nursing. APRN roles are advanced skills that all nurses have been striving to have. However, out of the four APRN roles, NPs are the most significant choice as they allow widespread learning of healthcare issues within the healthcare delivery system.
