Nutrition is the process by which the body metabolizes and utilizes nutrients, affecting every body system. Nutritional status refers to a person’s health condition as influenced by an individual’s nutrient consumption and use. An ideal nutritional status is achieved by consuming adequate, but moderate, energy-giving foods, vital nutrients, and other dietary components that are void of not toxins and contaminants (Reber et al., 2019). The purpose of this paper is to discuss methods employed in assessing nutritional status.

Methods Used To Assess Nutritional Status
The nutritional status reflects the body’s satisfaction with nutritive substances and the reflection of this to the physical characteristics, physiological characteristics, biochemical composition, functional capability, and the overall health status. Nutritional assessment is used in assessing nutritional status. It is a methodical approach of obtaining and interpreting findings to determine the type and basis of nutrition-associated illnesses affecting a person (Gbareen et al., 2021). The methods used in the nutritional assessment are based on dietary, laboratory-biochemical, anthropometric, and clinical evaluation.
Anthropometric assessment is one of the approaches used in assessment of nutritional status. It allows the provider to assess different components of the human body. Anthropometric measures used include Weight and percentage of weight change, Body mass index (BMI), Mid upper arm circumference (MUAC), Skin fold thickness, waist-to-hip ratio, and Mid arm muscle circumference (MAMC) (Bhattacharya et al., 2019). A BMI <18.5kg/m2 patient is considered underweight, while >25kg/m2 is overweight. Besides, A MUAC <23.5cm shows that the patient is at risk of malnutrition. Laboratory-biochemical tests are conducted in a nutrition assessment and are interpreted together with clinical examination findings.
Lab tests include Hematocrit (Hct), Hemoglobin (Hb), Albumin, Cholesterol, Glucose, Glycated Haemoglobin (HbA1c), Calcium, Phosphate, and micronutrients (vitamins and trace elements). Hct and Hb reflect the body’s iron supply, determined by nutritional intake. Besides, decreased levels of Albumin indicate malnutrition and decreased amounts of protein stored in body organs (Reber et al., 2019). The glucose levels reflect the body’s ability to metabolize glucose, while the HbA1c indicates a person’s average blood sugar level over several months. The levels of calcium and phosphate are used as a basis in assessment of the risk of refeeding syndrome.
Clinical evaluation involves taking a medical history and physical exam. The provider assesses the patient’s symptoms or present illnesses that may impact their nutritional status by decreasing nutritional intake or increasing nutritional losses. The conditions include cancer, GI disorders, depression, heart failure, COPD, and neurological disorders (Reber et al., 2019). Physical assessment involves examining the individual’s general appearance, skin, nails, hair, eyes, abdomen, and musculoskeletal. The physical exam helps in identifying signs of undernutrition. A dietary assessment is also used in assessing nutritional status. It involves estimating an individual’s total daily calorie intake and assessing the overall diet quality (Bhattacharya et al., 2019). The provider asks the patient or the caregiver about their daily dietary intake to help understand portion sizes, eating patterns, food preparation methods, and types of food and drink taken.
Conclusion
Various nutritional assessment methods are used in determining nutritional status. When conducting a nutritional assessment, the dietary, anthropometric, laboratory, and clinical findings are used to establish a patient’s nutritional status. The methods include anthropometric measurements, laboratory and biochemical tests, medical history, physical exam, and dietary assessment.
