Stages of Life and Influence of Age in Health Care Interview and Essay

Stages of life are the phases of development that a person goes through starting from infancy and ending with old age. During these stages, emotional, physiological, cognitive, and social elements differ from one stage to another leading to different experiences, actions, and perceptions. In interaction with healthcare services, a person’s stage of development influences perception, attitudes, and experience (Silva et al., 2021). For example, an adolescent may have a negative attitude about his interaction with healthcare professionals while an older might have a positive attitude, leading to different experiences and perceptions. Moreover, when working with older people, the issue of family involvement also impact their care experiences (Jazieh et al., 2018). In essence, age is a critical factor in patient education and how patients perceive their health experience (Falvo, 2011). The purpose of this assessment is to show how age influences healthcare perception and experience by interviewing an elderly woman, 78 years with diabetes and heart disease, who frequents the health system because of comorbidities.

Interviewee: Most definitely, I feel that the more I become old, the more the healthcare workers tend to be warm and supportive. I feel that now that I am old, they give me attention. Nurses take well care of me and they take their time to explain things like medication and my diabetes. They also ask me how I feel about my health and if there is anything I need.

Which areas of the hospital or clinic were most concerned with your well-being and feelings?

Interviewee: I have experienced attention in every area of the hospital, but the ward nurses are more concerned. They stay with me most of the time and frequently check if I need anything. They also show compassion and empathy by talking to me to keep my mind from wandering.

Was your family with you during this hospital stay or outpatient visit?

Interviewee: Yes, my daughter is always with me during the outpatient visits. Even though they do not allow family members to stay overnight during inpatient stays, they allow them to visit and stay longer at my bedside to keep me company. The doctor also talks to my daughter about my condition and explain things before doing any medical procedure.

Was your family included in your treatment, such as post-procedure instructions?

Interviewee: Yes, the nurses always involve my family when explaining medications that I need to take and what we need to do to ensure my well-being at home. The nurses also talk to my daughter about my diet and the foods that I need to take because of my diabetic condition.

Conclusion

The interview reveals that older people have a better experience with healthcare professionals and health services because they are given more attention. One theme that stands out from the interview is the tendency to collaborate with the patient and her family. Collaboration is important because it allows nurses to provide effective patient education. Collaboration also supports patient-centered care, which ensures that the perspective and needs of the patient are understood and responded to as expressed by the interviewee. The interview supports the view that the life stage has a critical influence on the perception and experience of patients. Healthcare providers should make an effort to connect with every patient regardless of their age to enhance the positive experience and promote the health and well-being of everyone.
