Nursing portfolios provide nurses an opportunity to demonstrate their achievements throughout the professional career journey. A professional portfolio is evidence of the nursing skills, achievements, and experience. Nurses can demonstrate the professional development in their portfolio using a host of strategies (Burns, 2018). The two strategies that I will employ include discussing growth and development, and use of evidence-based practice (EBP). Nurses have many growth and development opportunities in their practice. These comprise of one’s knowledge, progress and career experience as well as having clear goals and vision. For instance, as a registered nurse, I can discuss how I obtained the Bachelor of Science (BSN), my employment in my specialty and advancement as an in-charge nurse. I can also highlight how I intend to improve my knowledge and skills with an advanced degree like the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program. The implication is that taking opportunities to grow and develop as a nurse is an essential aspect of knowledge acquisition and promotion of high quality patient care.

The inclusion of evidence-based practice and my experience in the professional development goals is a critical approach as it shows my level of expertise and familiarity with the healthcare system (Weberg et al., 2018). Examples of EBP interventions include control of infection, provision of oxygen to patients, strategies to manage patient falls like purposeful hourly rounding, and effective communication through the SBAR model among others. For instance, in a pandemic-era, inflection control implores nurses to use personal protective equipment (PPEs) when handling COVID-19 patients.

Having the two strategies for my professional development goals would enhance my knowledge and experience, provide guidance to offer the best care to patients. The need to attain an advanced nurse status means that I should align my goals with the social change as propagated by the Walden University. The university asserts that social change can occur at a global scale and I believe that these strategies will assist me to contribute to the mission (Walden University, 2022). The strategies allow me to advance in the nursing practice and attain better certification. The possession of knowledge, advanced certification and sharing of approaches in health provision can offer a host of benefits to patients and increase the overall outcomes. The implication is that these strategies are essential in attaining social change as advanced by the university’s mission.
