Summary Capstone Project Proposal Presentation Essay
The Capstone presentation focused on medication errors as a significant clinical problem and elaborated on evidence-based interventions for preventing and avoiding medication errors. The major themes of the presentation were the context of medication errors in the emergency department, interventions to prevent and avoid medication errors, insights from scholarly literature, and resources needed to implement and sustain the intervention plan. Besides these thematic areas, the presentation aimed at obtaining faculty review and feedback.
The faculty’s review and feedback supported the argument that medication errors pose significant patient safety and clinical issues. According to Shitu et al. (2020), medication errors are preventable events that lead to inappropriate medication use that can occur at any stage of medication management, including prescribing, dispensing, and administration. In the emergency department (ED), medication mistakes are prevalent due to the high number of patients needing emergency care, time pressure, disruptions, and heavy workloads (Di Someone et al., 2018). As a result, it is essential to implement evidence-based interventions that address these contextual factors.
Although the presentation was successful, the faculty review and feedback cited the need to expound on approaches for addressing individual risk factors for medication errors, including tackling ignorance, bridging knowledge gaps, and enhancing the ability to handle and store high-risk medications. These faculty suggestions enabled me to develop my capstone project and identify more contextual interventions.
