Synthesis Discussion Essay
Evidence synthesis means combining different primary research results that test a similar hypothesis to generalize them and make them more applicable. Evidence synthesis helps understand a practice problem’s intensity. This discussion presents an application of research synthesis to introduce the practice problem. The selected practice problem is diabetes.
Diabetes is a group of endocrine conditions caused by difficulties in regulating blood glucose in the body. There are three types of diabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Diabetes is one of the national practice problems that is experienced globally. It is a practice problem due to its effect on patients’ quality of life and the pressure it exerts on the healthcare system. Diabetes complications include kidney failure, retinopathy, vision loss, and foot problems leading to amputations. Seboka, Yilma & Birhanu (2021) note that diabetes requires the input of various medical professions and the use of current healthcare technology.
According to Fang et al. (2021), diabetes increases the risk of hospitalization for infection. There are various challenges faced by diabetes patients in self-management (Whittemore et al., 2019). However, research evidence shows that patient education focused on diabetes self-management improves self-management practices in diabetes patients, thus improving patient outcomes Zheng et al. (2019). Therefore, the evidence presented from these sources depicts the diabetes practice problem and its intensity.

Instructions
Select one of the following options for your initial discussion post. Using the two research studies you appraised in NR715 and the one study you identified in Week 1 for the selected practice problem, write one paragraph where you apply the concepts of a synthesis.
Option 1: Use a synthesis of research study evidence and non-research evidence to introduce the practice problem.
Option 2: Use a synthesis of research study evidence and non-research evidence to introduce the implications of the practice problem that include the significance, mortality, and economic ramifications of the problem.

Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
Analyze research and non-research data for the purposes of critical appraisal and judgment of evidence for translation into practice. (POs 1, 3, 5, 7, 9)
Synthesize research study evidence and non-research evidence relevant to practice problems and a practice question. (POs 1, 3, 5, 9)
