Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium known as Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The lungs are the primary target of this bacteria, although it can attack other body parts, including the brain, spine, and kidneys. Mycobacterium tuberculosis does no cause TB to every person it infects. However, the majority develop TB, which is a fatal disease after being infected with this bacterium. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is transmitted through the air when a person with TB of the lungs or throat expels these pathogens to the air while speaking or coughing. Someone near the infected person breathes in the disease-causing micro-organism into his or her lungs contracting the disease. Despite significant TB incidence and mortality rates worldwide, ten million new TB infections were reported in 2019 globally (KFF, 2021). Similarly, Debbie has noticed an increase in TB diagnosis among young Hispanic men vising the health department.

As a BSN-prepared community health nurse, Debbie should start creating awareness about the high incidence and prevalence of TB in the community. Her awareness campaign should target a group of migrant farmworkers whose risk of contracting tuberculosis is relatively higher than other community members. The campaign should educate the group at an increased risk of contracting TB about various preventive measures, including covering the mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing and washing hands thoroughly after coughing or sneezing. Other strategies for controlling TB infections include masks & respirators, pasteurization of milk, and being vaccinated against TB. These preventive measures will reduce the TB transmission rate among the highly prone group in the community.

Debbie might use the primary, secondary, and tertiary interventions in managing this outbreak in the community. The primary intervention will involve advising individuals to prevent themselves from contracting TB (Ehrlich et al., 2019). The secondary intervention will entail detecting in its early stages and prevent it from worsening. According to Collins et al. (2019), this is the most critical intervention in a TB outbreak since it focuses on preventing more people from contracting the virus. Finally, tertiary prevention will involve improving the quality of life and minimizing the symptoms of TB. These interventions will manage TB outbreaks among the farmworkers at a low cost considering their financial constrain. Similar interventions are applicable in controlling the prevalence of TB outbreaks in my community. They will enable community members to protect themselves, stop TB from spreading, and reduce TB symptoms among the community members. However, cultural considerations are different from Debbie’s community. Interventions should embrace cultural diversity in the community.
