Topic 7 DQ 2: Achieving Universal EBP Culture

Patient outcomes primarily depend on the strategies health care professionals use in routine practice. Due to the need for effective care and high patient satisfaction, evidence-based practice (EBP) continues to gain more relevance as time advances. Consequently, health care professionals are encouraged to embrace EBP in health care delivery as organizations invest in appropriate programs to sustain an EBP culture (Duff et al., 2020). Despite its role in improving health care standards, EBP might not be universally applicable. It is crucial to evaluate the causes and effective interventions to overcome barriers to a universal EBP culture.

Reasons why evidence-based approaches might not yet be the standard practice for certain sectors of the health care industry include resources, organizational culture, and preferences of health care providers. As Yoo et al. (2019) underlined, not all health care sectors have adequate resources and a robust infrastructure to implement an evidence-based approach that succeeded in a different sector. The incongruence stems from research studies and EBP projects assessing interventions and outcomes using different patient populations and in different timeframes. The severity of patient problems also affects the relevance of evidence-based approaches in different clinical environments. Organizational culture depends on the values, workplace relationships, and work routines in health care environments. Often, it is challenging to introduce a new practice in a facility where health care providers are used to local practices. As Bach-Mortensen et al. (2018) noted, the challenge is widespread in third-sector organizations yet to embrace modernity and adaptation associated with implementing current practices and evidence-based interventions. Preferences also determine whether a particular organization is ready for new practices. As a result, evidence-based approaches might not thrive in sectors where subjective reasoning inhibits new practices.

Several strategies can be used to overcome these barriers to achieve a widespread and universal evidence-based culture. They include resource support from governments and stakeholders, a leadership that embraces innovation, and training health care professionals about the value of EBP and its implementation. Resource support would ensure that organizations have adequate and appropriate resources to implement and sustain new practices (Lehane et al., 2019). Leadership that embraces innovation is likely to support new practices. Training programs are instrumental in equipping health care professionals with the skills and knowledge required to promote an evidence-based culture.
