            Because they are involved in administrative duties, the chief nursing officers find themselves with tight schedules. The majority of the nurse leaders or managers who have been newly appointed to their positions struggle to strike a balance between work and their personal lives (Chunta, 2020).   A growing body of research shows that management turnover is one of the most chronic problems that the corporate world is facing (Felstead & Henseke, 2017; Lakshmypriya & Krishna, 2016).  There is evidence of the spill-over theory solving this problem.

            Work-life balance refers to a psychological phenomenon whereby a person’s work-related responsibilities do not overwhelm their ability to enjoy their personal life meaning that they can manage multiple responsibilities (Bello & Garba Ibrahim, 2020).  As a manager in an organization, I will advocate for practising the spill-over theory.  This theory has it that the attitude or behaviour that a manager displays in the workplace, they are more likely to project it to their personal life and the opposite is true (Lakshmypriya & Krishna, 2016).  There are two types of spill-overs, that is, the positive spill-over and the negative spill-over.  According to the positive spill-over, the satisfaction of achievement that a manager has at his place of work will have a positive impact on the quality of their personal life (Gold |Points: 40 |, 2015).  On the other hand, for the positive spill-over the work-related stress that a manager experience at the workplace has a greater possibility of extending to their personal life.

            Nurse leaders should employ such leadership strategies as maintaining an appropriate staffing ratio and encouraging teamwork.  There is evidence in the literature that hospitals and understaffed medical centres have high levels of patient falls and nosocomial infections which increases stress among the nurse managers (Chunta, 2020; Kelly et al., 2019).  Having the correct number of nurses will reduce illnesses and injuries to patients.  In turn, the same reduces stress among the nurse managers.  Besides, all the members of the healthcare team such as physicians, nurses and pharmacists should work as a team with a common goal(Mullen, 2015). The same makes work easier for the nurse managers and fosters a healing environment for the patients and their relatives

             Based on the spill-over theory, there is a need to make working life as enjoyable as possible. For example, there should be a fixed number of working hours per week for managers but they should have flexibility concerning the number of daily working hours.  This will allow them to take care of their commitments and on some days of the week, they can start working at any time that they deem fit as long as they complete the fixed number of hours set per week.  The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the corporate working dynamic and now employees can work remotely from where they feel comfortable, that is from home or even a hotel (Bello & Garba Ibrahim, 2020).  This will increase productivity since the majority of managers will attain work satisfaction.

            In conclusion, there is a need for managers to reduce work-related stress and improve the quality of their personal life.  One of the strategies is employing the spill-over theory and improving their work environment.
